Chapter 6

Briggs's hands came up away from his body with the specific emptiness of a man who has understood that he has run out of options before he had time to prepare for the understanding.

My father — General David Cross, retired, forty years of service, a file that would require clearances that Garrick had never held to read in full — put his free hand on my shoulder and looked at me with the expression of a man who has arrived both too late and exactly on time, and who is going to spend the rest of his life navigating the distance between those two things.

"I got your letter," he said.

"I know," I said.

He helped me up.

The investigation ran for eleven months and produced results that were not announced in any press release and were documented in reports that will remain classified for twenty years at minimum. Captain Garrick was taken into federal custody that afternoon and did not return to Camp Obsidian in any capacity. Briggs was arrested at the airfield forty minutes later attempting to board a civilian charter. Seven additional names connected to the drop zone coordinates in Caleb's encrypted file were identified, located, and processed through channels that the investigators described to me only in broad terms during the single debrief I was cleared to attend.

Ranger was not euthanized. He lives with my father now on a property in northern Virginia that has enough space for an aging Belgian Malinois to patrol without bumping into furniture. He still snarls when strangers approach the gate. My father says this is a feature.

Staff Sergeant Miller's testimony was voluntary, comprehensive, and delivered without the hesitation of someone protecting themselves — the hesitation of someone who had been protecting the wrong thing for fourteen months and had made a different decision when the gate came down. His cooperation was documented. His daughter's treatment continued. I am not the one who arranged this. I did not need to be.

Callahan requested a transfer to my unit within a week of the motor pool.

I approved it.
