Chapter 3 - PAGE FOUR

Calvin entered only after courthouse security cleared the corridor.

He looked older than Walter remembered.

Sixty-four.

Thinner.

Gray beard.

Dark overcoat folded over one arm.

He carried a rigid document folder in both hands.

Rebecca moved the matter off the public calendar and sealed the courtroom temporarily.

Not because the case had become secret.

Because chain-of-custody questions were now unfolding in real time and she did not want people walking in and out.

Calvin approached the clerk's table.

Torres stood farther away now.

Walter remained at the rail.

Rebecca said:

“Do not hand anything directly to Mr. Hayes.”

Calvin nodded.

He gave the folder to Nina.

Inside was a photocopy.

Four pages.

County District Attorney header.

Same case number.

STATE v. WALTER HAYES

The first paragraph matched Rebecca's three-page version almost word for word.

I entered the courthouse evidence annex after my shift and removed sealed currency from Box 3A.

Walter looked sick.

“I never said that.”

Calvin nodded.

“I know.”

Page two described disabling a corridor camera.

That part made Walter look away.

Rebecca noticed.

Page three described taking a cash pouch.

Page four contained a signature line.

Blank.

Below it, typed in Calvin's own old note format:

SUBJECT DECLINES TO ADOPT WRITTEN STATEMENT. INTERVIEW TERMINATED 7:18 PM. — C.R.

Rebecca read it twice.

Then compared it with the certified copy.

Her version ended on page three.

Walter's signature appeared below a paragraph that did not exist in Calvin's copy:

I have read the foregoing statement and affirm that it accurately reflects what I told Investigator Reed.

Calvin shook his head.

“I didn't write that paragraph.”

Rebecca asked:

“Where did your copy come from?”

“My personal work file.”

“You took case material home?”

“I kept carbon copies of interview drafts.”

“Permitted?”

“Back then?”

He hesitated.

“Not really.”

There.

No saint.

Calvin had violated retention rules.

The violation might now be the only reason a contradictory copy survived.

Rebecca said:

“Why keep this one?”

Calvin looked at Walter.

“Because I knew something was wrong.”

Walter laughed.

“You knew for fifteen years.”

“Yes.”

“And did what?”

Calvin's face tightened.

“Not enough.”

Rebecca cut in.

“We'll get there.”

Nina compared the certified copy to a digitized property receipt from the same arrest.

Then stopped.

“Judge.”

Rebecca looked over.

Nina enlarged two signatures on her screen.

One from the confession.

One from:

PERSONAL PROPERTY RETURN ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Walter signed that after his interview.

Belt.

Wallet.

Watch.

Keys.

Same date.

The signatures looked similar.

Walter stared.

“That's mine.”

Rebecca asked:

“The property form?”

“Yes.”

“The confession?”

“No.”

Nina zoomed farther.

Then farther.

One small ink tremor in the H.

One tiny break where the pen lifted before the final s.

Identical.

Not similar.

Identical.

Calvin leaned forward.

“That isn't possible with two separate wet signatures.”

Rebecca said nothing.

Walter looked at her.

“Now you believe me?”

“I'm looking.”

“That's not what I asked.”

“No.”

Rebecca met his eyes.

“Not yet.”

Walter's anger flashed.

Then Nina interrupted.

“There’s more.”

The confession signature had the exact same faint gray speck beneath the W that appeared in the scanned property form.

Not part of Walter's handwriting.

A copier artifact.

Rebecca stared.

Someone had not merely imitated Walter's signature.

Someone appeared to have copied the entire signature image from another document.

Calvin said:

“That's why the original matters.”

Rebecca looked toward the empty drawer.

Then Nina's computer chimed.

She had requested the secure-drawer audit.

One entry appeared.

7:42 that morning.

Drawer accessed.

Credential:

ARCHIVE RUNNER 03

Rebecca's expression changed.

“Who was assigned runner three today?”

Nina checked.

“No one.”

May you like

The credential had been retired eighteen months earlier.

And somehow it had opened the drawer ninety minutes before Walter's hearing.
