Chapter 6 - THE PRICE OF THE VIDEO

By sunset, the charity video had passed twelve million views. Commentators called Lily a miracle child, a fraud, a healer and a publicity stunt depending on which version generated more attention. Sarah’s name appeared online after a guest identified her, and within hours reporters discovered Daniel Rowan’s termination from St. Catherine’s.

The hospital did not attack Daniel directly. It did something more effective. It released a statement emphasizing that preliminary observations by trainees were routinely revised by supervising physicians and warning against “retrospective distortion of complex medical events.” Daniel’s old disciplinary file leaked to a television network the same evening.

Sarah stopped answering her phone after a reporter came to Lily’s school. Richard sent private security only after asking Sarah, because she had already made clear she did not want another wealthy family deciding what she needed without consulting her. Lily stayed home for two days while strangers debated whether her father had invented medical evidence to get money from a billionaire.

Richard wanted to issue a statement defending Daniel. Claire told him not to turn unresolved evidence into public fact. Sarah agreed. “Clear his name with proof,” she said. “Not because you feel guilty.”

Richard did feel guilty, though not for the reason she assumed. Daniel had apparently tried to reach him. Richard’s staff intercepted hundreds of letters, proposals and medical theories after the accident. He had told his office to discard anything promising miracle cures. Somewhere inside that wall of protection, Daniel’s warning disappeared with everything else Richard did not want to hear.

The financial consequences started next. Charles called an emergency Whitmore Holdings board meeting and argued that Richard should temporarily suspend plans to resume executive responsibilities until an independent medical and legal review ended. The company’s governance agreement transferred operational authority to Charles after Richard’s accident but allowed Richard to reclaim certain voting powers if physicians certified sufficient capacity to return.

The clause had nothing to do with walking.

Richard had full cognitive capacity and knew it.

That was exactly why Charles’s attempt disturbed him.

“You’re using this to keep control,” Richard said during the private board session.

Charles did not deny benefiting from the current structure. He argued that Richard was publicly accusing physicians and relatives based on records from a terminated fellow, creating instability around a company with twenty thousand employees. Several directors agreed that a temporary continuation of Charles’s authority was prudent.

Richard lost the vote.

The defeat changed the stakes. Until then, the mystery concerned his body and his medical history. Now the same people who withheld information about his recovery were using uncertainty about that recovery to decide his place inside the company he built.

Sarah faced consequences of her own. A nonprofit clinic where she worked part-time as an administrative assistant placed her on leave after reporters repeatedly appeared outside. They called it a safety measure and continued her pay, but Sarah heard the fear beneath the explanation. She told Richard not to intervene.

Lily was the one who refused to retreat. When Richard visited them, she placed Daniel’s photograph on the kitchen table and asked why everyone kept saying her father wanted money. Sarah told her adults sometimes attacked the easiest part of a person’s story when they could not answer the hardest part.

Lily considered that, then looked at Richard. “Did he ask you for money?”

“No.”

“Did he ask my mom?”

Sarah smiled faintly. “Your father was terrible at asking for money.”

Richard turned the photograph over again. Beneath Daniel’s six-word note, something lighter was visible near the fold. He angled it toward the window.

There was another line.

C.W. GOT THE PACKET. 8/14.

The date was one week before Whitmore Holdings completed its largest acquisition under Charles’s temporary leadership.

Richard knew the deal immediately.

He had opposed it before the accident.
