Chapter 11 - The Shadow Line

The aftermath of the Apex scandal did not settle quietly into the history books. Across four European capitals, the financial machinery that had sustained Dr. Keller’s network began to fracture, exposing deeper layers of corporate complicity.

Two weeks after our return to Montreux, I sat in the lower study of my estate with Marcus Vance—Helena’s younger brother and the sole surviving member of the Vance family board who had not been implicated in the criminal indictments.

Marcus was thirty-two, dressed in a muted charcoal suit, his face pale and hollow from fortnight of non-stop interrogations by federal prosecutors.

"I didn't know, Victor," Marcus said, his voice ragged as he set a crystal tumbler of scotch onto the mahogany desk. "On my life, on my family’s name... I thought Helena’s donations to Sankt Elisabeth were ordinary charitable contributions. I had no idea she was using firm infrastructure to secure an illicit adoption."

I looked at him across the desk, my eyes cold and analytical. "Ignorance isn't an absolution, Marcus. Your firm's accounting signature was on every wire transfer Keller received."

"I know," Marcus whispered, pressing his palms against his face. "Which is why I am turning over the remaining un-redacted ledgers from the Vance family trust directly to your legal team. I want the firm dissolved. I want every asset liquidated and paid into the victims' fund."

"Why come to me personally?" I asked.

Marcus looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "Because Keller had a silent partner. Someone above the Vance estate. Someone who controlled the political clearances in Bern."

I straightened in my chair. "Who?"

Marcus reached into his breast pocket and pulled out an old black-and-white photograph. It showed a young Helena standing beside a distinguished, white-haired man in a military uniform at a Swiss diplomatic gala thirty years ago.

"General Henri Laurent," Marcus said. "Head of the Swiss Federal Intelligence Directorate until his retirement five years ago. He was the man who ensured that the death certificates issued by Sankt Elisabeth were never flagged by state registrars."

"Is Laurent still alive?"

"He lives in a heavily guarded chalet above Gstaad," Marcus said softly. "And three days ago, his private security firm began purchasing liquid assets across Zurich. He’s preparing to leave the country before the federal prosecutors finalize his arrest warrant."

I looked down at the photograph, feeling the old familiar precision tightening inside my chest.

"Nolan," I called out toward the open study door.

Nolan stepped into the room instantly. "Sir?"

"Get the winter vehicles prepared," I said. "We're going to Gstaad."
