Chapter 10 - THE HOUSE DANIEL BOUGHT TWICE
Settlement discussions began six months later.
Richard’s attorneys knew title litigation was collapsing.
The fraud questions were worse.
Eleanor wanted peace.
Thomas wanted nothing except acknowledgment that he had been right for twelve years.
Kate wanted boundaries.
Richard offered to waive all claims to Rosewood Hall if Kate agreed not to pursue certain civil damages arising from the lockout and property interference.
Rebecca advised considering it.
Kate did.
Then added conditions.
Richard and Eleanor could not enter Rosewood without written invitation.
No direct financial contact with the children.
No statements questioning the adopted children’s status inside the Whitmore family.
Any future contact with the grandchildren would occur only by Kate’s consent and, where age appropriate, the children’s.
Richard rejected the language about the children.
That told Kate enough.
Negotiations paused.
Then Jack asked to speak at the next family meeting.
At fifteen, he had Daniel’s stubbornness despite sharing none of his DNA.
He sat across from Richard.
“You keep calling me Kate’s son like Dad didn’t sign my adoption papers.”
Richard said nothing.
Jack continued:
“I don’t want your house.”
“It isn’t about—”
“It is.”
Jack’s voice shook.
“You think we’re going to take something that belongs to you. Dad already gave us the only thing I cared about.”
Richard looked at him.
“A last name?”
“A dad.”
Silence.
Even Rebecca looked down.
Jack finished:
“If you need the house more than you need grandchildren, say it. But stop pretending this is about Daniel.”
