Chapter 9 - THE FATHER WHO CAME HOME DIFFERENTLY
Eric moved into a townhouse ten minutes from Megan’s house.
Not back with Megan.
That distinction mattered.
Friends asked.
Relatives speculated.
One aunt even said, “Maybe this brings you two back together.”
Megan shut that down immediately.
Divorce had not been a mistake simply because the next marriage failed.
Eric and Megan could become better co-parents without turning history into romance.
Eric’s relationship with Alison recovered slowly.
At first she became anxious whenever he mentioned work travel.
“Are you coming back?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
He started giving exact times.
Then proving them.
If he said six, he came at six.
If delayed, he video-called.
He stopped telling Alison adults were “busy” when a more specific truth was possible.
He also began therapy.
Not because a court ordered it.
Because he finally understood passivity was not neutrality.
One evening, six months after the haircut, Alison sat at Megan’s kitchen table coloring while Eric packed her overnight bag.
She watched him.
Then asked:
“Did you leave because I didn’t give enough hair?”
Eric stopped.
Megan’s heart almost broke.
He crouched immediately.
“No.”
Alison looked unconvinced.
Eric’s voice shook.
“I was gone for work because I made grown-up choices about my job. None of that happened because of you. Your hair never had anything to do with me coming home.”
She stared at him.
“Janice said helping would make you happy.”
Eric closed his eyes for half a second.
Then said:
“I should have told you something a long time ago.”
“What?”
“Grown-ups are responsible for their own feelings.”
Alison thought about that.
“All of them?”
“As much as they can be.”
“What if they’re sad?”
“You can be kind. You don’t have to give them something that belongs to you.”
She touched her short hair.
“My curls.”
“Your curls.”
“My toys.”
“Yes.”
“My hugs?”
Eric’s face cracked slightly.
“Yes. Even hugs.”
Alison looked toward Megan.
“Mom says that too.”
Eric smiled sadly.
“Mom’s right.”
Megan said nothing.
That conversation did more to restore Eric’s place in Alison’s world than every apology he gave before it.
