Chapter 8 - THE PAPER VANESSA SIGNED
The guardianship draft had one peculiarity.
Vanessa’s signature was already notarized.
That made Rebecca curious.
Why notarize an unfiled draft?
She contacted the notary.
The answer mattered.
Vanessa had presented the document as part of an “emergency family placement package” and stated that the child’s mother had ongoing health concerns.
The notary remembered because Vanessa appeared anxious and repeatedly asked whether the paper would still be valid if “something happened suddenly.”
Rachel stared when Rebecca told her.
“She was waiting.”
“Preparing.”
“For me to get sick.”
“Yes.”
Then Rebecca found a second document prepared the same day.
An affidavit draft.
Statement of Family Concern Regarding Minor Child Lily Bennett
Unsigned.
But written in first person for Frank.
It described Rachel as:
“frequently exhausted,”
“emotionally volatile after medical and reproductive trauma,”
“overly dependent on the child for emotional comfort.”
Rachel felt physically sick.
Overly dependent on the child.
They had taken attachment and made it evidence.
Frank admitted later that Vanessa showed him the affidavit but he never signed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
He answered:
“I didn’t want to upset everybody.”
Rachel laughed.
There it was.
Her father’s moral weakness.
Not cruelty.
Avoidance.
He had known enough to stop something and chose family quiet instead.
Rachel said:
“You didn’t avoid conflict. You just assigned the cost to me.”
Frank had no answer.
Then Rebecca asked him whether he supported Vanessa becoming guardian.
Frank looked ashamed.
“I thought if something really happened, maybe.”
“Instead of Emily?”
“She lives far away.”
“Instead of Daniel?”
“If he was traveling.”
Every adult had a reason.
Distance.
Work.
Stress.
School continuity.
Individually plausible.
Collectively, they had constructed a path around Rachel’s actual decisions.
That was the betrayal.
