Chapter 7 - The Poison in the Well

The heart monitor’s steady beep... beep... beep... chimed softly in the quiet room as Olivia lay back against her pillows, her breathing gradually stabilizing as the IV medication worked through her system.

Lucy had fallen asleep in the wide armchair near the window, bundled up in Ethan’s heavy suit jacket, her small face peaceful for the first time in hours.

Ethan sat in the bedside chair, his thumb gently stroking the back of Olivia’s fragile hand.

"She threatened to kill you, Ethan," Olivia whispered, her voice raspy, her eyes fixed on the ceiling tiles. "Twelve years ago... when I was seven months pregnant. You were working eighteen hours a day trying to build that framing business. You took out a twenty-thousand-dollar personal loan from Arthur Hale."

Ethan listened, his jaw locked tight.

"Victoria came to the cottage while you were at the lumber yard," Olivia continued, a tear trailing down her cheek. "She brought her father's lawyer. She showed me the loan documents. She said if I didn't leave the city immediately, Arthur would call in the note, declare your business fraudulent, and ensure you went to state prison for loan default."

"She lied," Ethan rasped, his eyes burning with rage. "The loan wasn't due for two years."

"I was twenty-two, Ethan!" Olivia wept quietly, turning her head to look at him. "I was terrified! I had no money, no family, and a baby on the way! Victoria told me you would ruin your entire life trying to raise a child in a garage while fighting her father in court. She offered me money to leave. I refused it. So she said... 'If you don't take the checks and disappear, I'll make sure Ethan loses everything he's ever worked for before the baby is even born.'"

Ethan closed his eyes, a deep, agonizing groan escaping his throat.

"So I lied to you," Olivia whispered. "The night before I left... I said those horrible things to you. I told you the baby was another man's. I told you I didn't love you... because I knew that was the only way you wouldn't come looking for me."

"Liv..." Ethan’s voice broke. He leaned forward, pressing his forehead against her thin hand. "You carried that alone for twelve years?"

"I kept the checks in the tea box," Olivia said softly, glancing over at the sleeping little girl in the armchair. "Because every month when those checks arrived in the mail... I knew Victoria was still watching me. I knew if I tried to write to you, she would hurt you or try to take Lucy away. But I kept them so Lucy would know... her father was a good man. A man who loved us."

The heavy oak door of Room 412 suddenly clicked open.

Ethan sat up sharply, his hand instinctively moving to shield Olivia’s chest.

Standing in the doorway was a tall man in a navy suit, carrying a thick leather briefcase under his arm. Behind him stood two uniform officers from the Metropolitan Police Department.

It was not Victoria. It was Detective Marcus Vance from the Financial Crimes Division.

"Ethan Pierce?" Detective Vance asked, stepping into the room and pulling a gold badge from his breast pocket. "We were directed here by St. Jude's Chapel."

Ethan stood up slowly. "Detective?"

"We received an emergency transmission from the County Registrar's office twenty minutes ago," Vance said, his tone professional and cold. "Along with a formal criminal complaint filed by your firm's secondary partner, Marcus Sterling."

Vance opened his leather briefcase, pulling out a sealed police folder.

"It appears Victoria Hale and her father, Arthur Hale, are currently being taken into custody at the chapel," Vance announced flatly. "For twelve years of systematic extortion, grand fraud, and illegal offshore diversion of your company's private restoration trusts."
