Chapter 3 - The Footage

Vanessa lunged for my phone when she realized what I had opened.

Elena moved first.

She was shaking, injured, and half my size, but she rose between us before Vanessa could reach me.

“Don’t touch him,” she said.

Vanessa stopped.

Not because Elena was stronger.

Because the room had changed, and she knew it.

I played only three seconds of the security feed before I had to pause it. There was my mother at the foot of the stairs, backing away from Vanessa. There was Vanessa pointing toward the hallway cabinet. There was Elena rushing in from the kitchen. Then Vanessa struck the wall with the candlestick so close to my mother’s head that Ruth dropped to the floor.

My mother made a small sound beside me.

I closed the video.

Not because I did not need more proof.

Because she did not need to relive it while lying on the floor.

I called 911, then my attorney, then the bank. My voice stayed even through all three calls, which seemed to frighten Vanessa more than shouting would have.

“Yes,” I told the bank’s fraud department. “Freeze all secondary access tied to Vanessa Whitmore. Yes, immediately. No outgoing transfers. No card activity. No exceptions.”

Vanessa stared at me.

“You can’t do that.”

“I just did.”

“This is my house too.”

“No,” I said. “It is a crime scene.”

Her face twisted.

Elena helped my mother sit upright while we waited. Ruth kept whispering that she was sorry.

That nearly broke me.

My mother was apologizing while bruised on my floor because my wife had trained her to believe survival itself was an inconvenience.

“You do not apologize,” I said, kneeling in front of her. “Not for this. Not ever.”

Vanessa scoffed.

“She’s performing for you.”

I turned toward her slowly.

“Be very careful.”

She opened her mouth, then closed it.

The sirens were still distant when the second security clip loaded on my phone. This one showed Vanessa in my study three nights earlier, removing my father’s watch from a locked drawer where my mother had hidden it after accusing Vanessa of selling jewelry. Vanessa held it up to the camera, smiled, and slipped it into a black velvet pouch.

Ruth began to cry.

Elena covered her mouth.

Vanessa whispered, “Daniel.”

That was the first time she sounded like my wife.

Too late.
