Chapter 10 - THE STORY THEY REHEARSED

The rehearsal happened in Daniel’s garage the night before the crash.

Ethan described it slowly.

Daniel never said, “We’re going to kill Rachel.”

Instead he built a hypothetical.

“If something happens tomorrow, people will ask questions.”

“What kind of thing?”

“Anything. Car trouble. Accident. Whatever.”

Then Daniel gave Ethan lines.

Rachel had complained the brakes felt soft before.

False.

Rachel had postponed maintenance.

False.

Rachel sometimes drove too fast on mountain roads.

Partly true, and therefore useful.

Ethan was supposed to say he had warned her to get the car checked.

Daniel repeated the story twice.

“Why didn’t that scare you?” Rachel asked.

Ethan looked ashamed.

“It did.”

“Then why did you still do it?”

Ethan’s answer came quietly.

“Because he told me you were going to send him to prison.”

Rachel sat back.

“For stealing from you.”

“I didn’t believe that part.”

“Why not?”

“Because Dad said the trust was his to manage.”

“It wasn’t.”

“I know.”

Ethan’s voice hardened suddenly.

“You keep saying that like I knew all this.”

Rachel stared at him.

“You knew cutting my brake line could hurt me.”

He looked away.

“Yes.”

“You knew enough.”

Ethan flinched.

It was cruel.

It was also true.

For weeks, Rachel had heard adults describe Ethan as manipulated.

Vulnerable.

Influenced.

All of those things mattered.

But she refused to let compassion become dishonesty.

“You can be used by someone and still make a choice,” she said.

Ethan began crying.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“Because I need you to understand something. I may forgive you someday. I may not. But if you build your entire explanation around what your father made you do, you’ll become exactly like him.”

Ethan looked at her.

Rachel’s voice softened.

“Daniel survives by making every decision belong to somebody else. Business failed because clients were unfair. He took your money because he had to protect the family. He lied because I pushed him. He used you because you were angry.”

Ethan wiped his face.

“What do I say then?”

“The truth.”

“What truth?”

“That you were lied to.”

Rachel paused.

“And then you made a terrible choice.”

Ethan nodded.

For the first time, he did not argue.

Then he told her one final thing.

After cutting the line, Ethan panicked.

He told Daniel he wanted to undo it.

Daniel said there was no time.

“I said I was going to warn you.”

“What did he do?”

“He grabbed me.”

“Did he hit you?”

“No.”

“What did he say?”

Ethan looked straight at Rachel.

“He said if I warned you, he’d tell police it was all my idea.”

May you like

Rachel stopped breathing.

Daniel had planned the scapegoat before the crash even happened.
