Chapter 6 - Aaron’s Name in Court

The emergency hearing happened fast.
Reena arrived wearing a pale sweater and no makeup, carrying tissues like she had prepared for a role.
She cried before the judge asked the first question.
She said she was overwhelmed.
She said she was grieving.
She said Drew was difficult.
She said Lily refused food.
She said Peter had always wanted to take Aaron’s children.
Peter sat with both hands clasped and listened to her turn neglect into hardship.
Then the evidence came.
The medical reports.
The deadbolt.
The footage.
The messages.

The hospital notes.
The 911 call.
And Drew’s statement, given gently with a child advocate beside him.
Reena stopped crying before the judge finished reading.
That was when Peter knew the tears had only been tools.
The judge asked Peter to speak.
He stood slowly.
“My brother died believing his children were safe,” he said. “I believed it too, because I wanted to respect a grieving widow.”
His voice shook, but he did not stop.
“I was wrong. I should have pushed harder. I should have asked more questions. But I am asking now, under oath, that Drew and Lily not be returned to the house they crawled away from.”
The courtroom went silent.
Reena looked down.
The judge ordered emergency placement with Peter pending further proceedings.
No contact from Reena except through court-approved channels.
Medical care.
Counseling.
A full investigation.
Peter sat back down.
For the first time since Drew appeared on the porch, he let himself breathe.
Not because the fight was over.
Because the children were not going back that night.
Sometimes safety begins with one night.
Then another.
May you like
Then another.
Until a child finally believes it.
