Chapter 7 - MELISSA’S FIRST TRUE STATEMENT

Melissa asked to see Rachel on the second hospital day.

Rachel said no.

Then yes.

Then almost changed back to no.

Rebecca recommended waiting until Melissa had counsel because anything said between sisters could complicate both criminal and family proceedings.

Rachel hated that.

But she waited.

Two days later, Melissa entered a private hospital consultation room with an attorney named Grace Donnelly beside her.

She looked terrible.

No makeup.

Hair tied back.

Same jeans from the kitchen.

Rachel had never seen her sister look less arranged.

Melissa sat across from her.

“I’m sorry.”

Rachel laughed once.

Melissa flinched.

“Don’t start there.”

“Okay.”

“Start with what you did.”

Melissa swallowed.

Then did.

She mailed Daniel her prescription.

She wrote the email saying Rachel sounded paranoid.

She agreed to come for the intervention.

She knew Daniel had been giving Rachel something to sleep but believed Rachel had eventually consented.

Rachel interrupted.

“Why would you believe that?”

“Because he told me you did.”

“You never asked me.”

Melissa’s eyes filled.

“No.”

“You talked about my mind with my husband and never asked me.”

“No.”

“You helped him build a story.”

“Yes.”

The word came broken.

But clear.

Rachel leaned back.

“Did you know he was giving anything to Noah?”

Melissa’s head snapped up.

“No.”

“Did you know about the life insurance?”

“No.”

“Did you know about the trust?”

“Only that Dad left money for Noah. Not the details.”

“Then why did you say ‘investigation’ in the kitchen?”

Melissa closed her eyes.

Because Daniel had used that word before.

He told Melissa that if Rachel refused evaluation and made accusations about medication, someone might investigate the family.

He said it would be humiliating.

He said his professional reputation could suffer.

He made Melissa promise that if authorities asked, she would say the medication conversation came from her.

“You agreed?”

Melissa nodded.

Rachel stared at her.

“You agreed to take responsibility for medicine you thought he was giving me without my knowledge.”

“I told myself it was just sleep medication.”

“That’s not better.”

“I know.”

Finally.

No excuse.

Melissa continued.

Daniel also asked her to keep the blue folder in her suitcase “for privacy.” She did not know it held the policy.

Grace Donnelly slid forward copies of Melissa’s phone records.

Daniel’s message:

Don’t open the blue folder. It has Rachel’s policy documents and private records she’d be embarrassed for anyone to see.

Another:

If she fights the intervention, remember we’re trying to save Noah too.

And one sent the morning of the collapse:

Bring everything. After today we can finally reset this family.

Rachel read them.

Then asked:

“What did you think reset meant?”

Melissa began crying.

“I thought you’d go somewhere for a week.”

“A psychiatric hospital.”

“Yes.”

“Against my will.”

“If they said you needed it.”

“Who is they?”

Melissa had no answer.

Daniel.

A doctor he chose.

Paper he prepared.

Anyone except Rachel.

That was the moment Rachel understood her sister’s failure completely.

Melissa had not wanted Rachel harmed.

She had wanted someone else to make Rachel easier.

And in the space between those things, Daniel built a crime.
