Chapter 5 - First Vector — The Falling Mountain

The central sparring area consisted of a twenty-by-twenty-foot square of thick, shock-absorbing black vinyl mats.
Bennett stepped onto the mat first, his 195-pound frame looming like an iron monument. To his right stood Kowalski, a six-foot-one former college wrestler weighing 210 pounds. To his left stood Drake, a six-foot combat swimmer with thick arms and a broad chest.
Combined, the three men brought over six hundred pounds of pure, aggressive combat mass to the mat.
Sarah stood alone in the center of the square. She occupied less than two square feet of space. Her dark hair was pinned back neatly, her faded charcoal belt resting securely across her hips. Her hands were raised now, kept at chest height, palms open, fingers relaxed—the classic, deceptive open-guard stance of the Phantom Protocol.
"Rules are simple, princess," Bennett growled, bouncing slightly on his feet, his heavy boxing stance setting in. "Tap out or go to sleep."
"No rules," Sarah replied softly.
"Your funeral," Bennett barked. "Drake! Take her legs! Kowalski, cover the flank!"
Drake didn't hesitate. Trained in explosive freestyle wrestling shots, he dropped his hips instantly, driving his boots into the rubber mat with a loud SLAP. He launched his entire two-hundred-pound frame forward in a low, lightning-fast double-leg takedown, aimed directly at Sarah’s knees.
To an untrained observer, the attack was unavoidable. Drake moved with terrifying velocity, his massive arms extended to trap her legs and drive her spine into the hard floor.
Sarah didn't retreat. She didn't jump backward.
At the exact microsecond before Drake’s shoulders made contact with her shins, Sarah executed the first movement of the Phantom Protocol: The Hollow Step.
Instead of resisting the incoming momentum, she pivoted ninety degrees on the ball of her lead foot, sliding her rear foot back in a tight arc. Her body evaporated from the line of attack like a ghost.
Drake’s explosive entry met only empty air.
As Drake’s massive mass surged past her, completely out of balance due to his own forward momentum, Sarah reached down with surgical precision. She didn't punch him. She placed her left palm flat against the back of Drake’s neck, applying three pounds of downward pressure, while simultaneously driving the edge of her right heel directly into the back of his right knee joint.
CRACK-THUD!
The physics were absolute. Drake’s own two hundred pounds of momentum, combined with the precise structural disruption of his knee hinge, resulted in a catastrophic loss of balance.
His body flipped violently forward, slamming face-first into the hard vinyl mat with a bone-rattling crash that echoed through the high steel girders of the roof.
Before Drake could even register what had hit him, Sarah’s right foot swept under his chin as he bounced, her heel catching his jaw with a sharp, controlled tap that shut down his central nervous system instantly.
Drake went limp, rolling onto his side, his eyes unfocused, completely unconscious.
Total elapsed time: 1.8 seconds.
The gymnasium went utterly, terrifyingly silent.
Bennett froze in mid-stride. Kowalski stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes wide with absolute disbelief as he looked down at his two-hundred-pound squad mate lying motionless on the mat.

Sarah hadn't even broken a sweat. She reset her stance, dropping back into her open-handed, low-gravity posture, her breath calm and rhythmic.
"One," Sarah said quietly.
