Chapter 1 - THE SUN ON THE HIGH PLAINS

The harsh afternoon sunlight hit the high-desert shooting range outside Colorado Springs with unyielding intensity. Situated at nearly seven thousand feet above sea level, the air was crisp, thin, and remarkably clear, causing every detail of the distant mountain ridge to stand out in sharp relief. The dry grass surrounding the firing line hummed under the heat, while orange wind flags spaced at two-hundred-yard intervals snapped lazily in the shifting crosswinds coming down from Pikes Peak.
This was the annual Joint Forces Long-Range Precision Marksmanship Competition—a high-stakes proving ground where elite marksmen from every branch of the armed forces gathered to test their skills at distances exceeding one thousand yards. Behind the main safety barrier, dozens of spectators, senior instructors, and fellow military shooters stood in dark tactical caps and sunglasses, holding spotting scopes and high-powered binoculars.
Lying completely still on a thick green shooting mat in Lane 14 was Lieutenant Claire Bennett.
At thirty-four, Claire was a legend among those who understood long-range ballistics, though she never sought public attention. Her brown hair was pulled back tightly into a low tactical bun, tucked beneath her eye protection and ear muffs. She wore a fitted olive tactical top and camouflage trousers, her body completely relaxed against the dirt floor. Beneath her right shoulder rested a custom bolt-action precision rifle, its heavy matte-black barrel extending over a carbon-fiber bipod, equipped with a top-tier variable optic lens that shimmered under the direct sunlight.
Claire’s breathing was nearly imperceptible. Her hand rested on the tactical stock, her index finger resting lightly along the frame, well clear of the trigger guard. She was a master of focus—quiet, deeply controlled, and utterly immune to the surrounding noise.
A few feet behind her stood Captain Grant Holloway.

At thirty-seven, Grant was the poster child of military marksmanship: tall, fit, short brown hair, wearing expensive range gear adorned with unit patches. He was wildly competitive, immensely skilled, and currently sitting at the top of the leaderboards for the afternoon heat. But for the past five minutes, Grant had been watching Claire’s rifle position with growing irritation and amusement.
She wasn't aiming at the designated 1,000-yard target line where every other shooter had placed their impacts. Her long rifle barrel was angled noticeably to the left, pointing into the vast, empty expanse of the high-desert scrubland far beyond the competition limits.
