Chapter 5 - The Utility Room
The basement smelled of rust, wet cement, and heat pipes that had not worked properly in years. Rachel called Nora’s name once and got only the hollow echo of her own voice. Harris went left toward the laundry area while Rachel moved right past storage cages and broken appliances. Then she heard it—a faint thud, then another. Not plumbing. Not rats. A human sound trying not to become hope. “Police!” she called. “If anyone’s down here, make a sound.” This time the answer came from behind an old maintenance door chained from the outside. Someone hit it weakly from within.
Harris cut the chain with a crowbar from the super’s closet. The door opened inward, and Nora Sloan fell forward onto her hands. She was drenched, shivering, and pale beneath a bruise rising along her temple. Her wrists were marked red where they had been bound with extension cord. She tried to speak before she could breathe correctly. “My kids,” she said. “Please tell me my kids are okay.” Rachel caught her by the shoulders. “They’re alive. Your daughter called 911. Your son’s at the hospital. They’re safe.” The relief on Nora’s face was so violent it looked almost like pain.
Through broken breaths, Nora explained what happened. Derek had found them two weeks earlier at a grocery store and started circling the building at night. She had been saving to move again. When Leo’s fever spiked, she left only because the over-the-counter medicine at home was gone. Derek was waiting outside the pharmacy. He accused her of hiding his “family,” demanded keys, and grabbed her when she tried to run. She fought hard enough to tear his cheek with her nails, but he dragged her back through the alley and locked her in the old utility room, planning to go upstairs for the children once the building quieted. “He said no one would believe me,” Nora whispered. “He said if I screamed, the neighbors would just call me crazy like always.” Rachel helped her stand. “Tonight,” she said, “your daughter made sure someone listened.”
