Chapter 8 - The Shattered Glass

The moment Damon crossed the threshold into the bedroom, his eyes locked onto Claire’s shivering, half-dressed figure standing beside the mahogany vanity.
He stopped dead in his tracks.
The crystal tumbler in his hand tilted slightly, several drops of freezing water splashing over the rim and soaking into the cuff of his clean white shirt. His jaw dropped, his face draining of all blood until he looked like a corpse standing in the midday sun. For three long, agonizing seconds, the only sound in the room was the heavy, rhythmic thud of the ceiling fan and the muffled weeping of the woman in the borrowed silk slip.
"Claire..." Damon breathed, his voice cracking into a ragged whisper. "What are you doing out here? I told you to stay inside."
Claire didn't look at him. She shrank back against the vanity, her hands clutching the black silk to her collarbones, shaking her head in frantic, silent terror.
Damon’s head snapped toward Evelyn.
The sudden, catastrophic collapse of his control transformed his panic into something dark, ugly, and feral. He set the crystal glass down on the nearest dresser with a violent, concussive slam that sent a hairline fracture spiderwebbing across the base of the glass.
He closed the distance between them in three long, aggressive strides, stopping barely eighteen inches from his pregnant wife. His muscular frame leaned forward, his hands clenching into fists at his sides, his hazel eyes blazing with a desperate, cornered fury.
"You forced her out," Damon hissed, his voice dropping into a low, venomous register intended to terrify her into submission. "You couldn't just let me handle it. You had to drag her into the light and turn this into a public execution."
Evelyn did not flinch. She did not take a step back. She looked up into his contorted, sweating face with the majestic, unyielding stillness of a mountain surveying a dying storm.
"She dragged herself into the light the moment she took off her clothes in our bed, Damon," Evelyn said evenly.
"You're hysterical!" Damon shouted, abandoning the whisper entirely, his voice booming off the tray ceiling and rattling the glass sconces on the wall. "Look at yourself! You're eight months pregnant, you're paranoid, you're hallucinating conspiracies where there is nothing but an innocent, tragic mistake! Claire was having a panic attack about Julian, she came over to talk to me because you weren't home, and things got out of hand! It was an accident!"
"An accident," Evelyn repeated, her voice so quiet, so deadly calm, that it made his shouting sound hollow and ridiculous.
She gestured slightly with her chin toward the floorboards.
"Did her bra accidentally unhook itself and fall beneath the bench, Damon? Did your trousers accidentally unbuckle themselves? Did your three buttons accidentally tear themselves from your shirt?"
Damon’s chest heaved. He raised a shaking hand, running his fingers roughly through his disheveled hair, his eyes darting frantically between the two women.
"Think about what you're doing, Evelyn!" he snarled, stepping closer, his face inches from hers. "Think about your life! You think you can walk away from me? You think you can take my daughter and live on some pathetic child-support stipend in an apartment? I built this empire! I own the private equity group, I own this brownstone, I own every judge in Cook County! If you breathe a single word of this to Julian or the board, I will hire five law firms to tie you up in court until you don't have a penny left for diapers! I will take full custody of that child before she takes her first breath!"
The threat hung in the sunlit air like a cloud of mustard gas.
In the corner, Claire let out a sharp, horrified gasp, covering her mouth with both hands as she realized the monstrous depths of the man she had allowed into her bed.
Evelyn slowly lifted her left hand from beneath the lapel of her cream cashmere coat.
She brought her smartphone up into the light.
The screen was fully illuminated, displaying the live 4K recording interface. At the top of the display, the timer read: 08:42. Beneath the red recording indicator, a secondary window showed a secure, encrypted enterprise cloud transfer protocol that had just reached one hundred percent completion.

Evelyn looked into her husband’s bulging, bloodshot eyes.
"You're not going to court, Damon," Evelyn whispered. "And you are never going to touch my daughter."
