Ryker saw my face change. "You know them."
I did not answer, because what I knew was not something that could be compressed into the time available, and because what I was looking at in that photograph was a thread that connected two events across eighteen months and two continents and the deaths of four people I had known by name and callsign and the specific way they moved through doorways.
Hayes looked at the photograph. Then he looked at me. The color left his face in a clean, complete way.
He turned to the courtyard — to Ryker, to the six marked Marines, to the evaluation cadre, to every operator who was present — and he said the thing that ended whatever remained of the training day.
"Nobody leaves this range until we know what Lieutenant Blake just recognized."
The investigation that followed was conducted under classification levels that preclude detailed description in this account. What I can tell you is that the network connected by the triangle marking was active in seven countries and had been operating, in the specific theater where Team Bravo went into that Syrian village, for four years before the morning Crawford died. The intelligence failure that sent us into a cold village that was not cold was not a random breakdown in the collection process. It was something that had been shaped.

The full picture took eleven months to assemble, by which time I was working in a capacity that also cannot be described in detail, alongside a team that had been built specifically for this pattern of problem. The photograph in Hayes's folder was the third confirmed visual of the triangle marking in eighteen months. I had provided the location of the first. I had been unconscious at the second. The third had arrived in Coronado in a sealed folder because someone in a Washington office had reviewed surveillance imagery from an operation in a different country entirely and had run it through a cross-reference that produced my case file, and had made the decision that the person most likely to understand what the photograph contained was the person who had been inside the building where the same marking first appeared.
They were right.
