Chapter 6 - The Child's Shield

The industrial vacuum cleaner—dropped from the top of the second-floor stairs—came crashing down the narrow wooden steps, smashing into the infirmary doorframe with a thunderous crunch of metal and plastic.

The sudden, deafening impact shattered the deadly silence in the hallway.

Julian’s eyes flicked toward the door for a fraction of a second.

It was all the time I needed.

I slammed my head backward into Julian’s face, my skull cracking against his nose with a wet crunch. He stumbled back, his suppressed pistol discharging into the plaster ceiling with a muffled THUMP.

I spun on my heel, my left fist driving straight into Julian’s throat, knocking the breath from his lungs.

Marco lunged forward with the tire iron, swinging at my head. I ducked beneath the heavy iron bar, stepped inside his guard, and drove my nine-millimeter weapon into his ribs, firing three controlled shots into his tactical vest.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The heavy kinetic force sent Marco’s six-foot-four body crashing back into the steel medicine cabinets, shattering glass bottles of saline and alcohol across the floor.

Julian scrambled toward his dropped weapon, blood pouring from his broken nose.

"GET OUT!" I roared at Clara, grabbing Grace Harper by her good arm and hauling her off the examination table.

In the doorway of the infirmary stood little Mia Harper. She was still holding the faded blue shawl wrapped around her sleeping baby sister, her small hands shaking, her face white with horror as she looked at the blood on the floor.

"Mia! Run!" Grace gasped, clutching her bleeding shoulder.

Julian recovered his pistol, pointing it directly at Grace’s chest. "Nobody leaves this room alive!"

Before Julian could pull the trigger, Mia didn't run away.

She stepped directly into the threshold of the infirmary, placing her six-year-old body straight between Julian’s gun and her mother. She raised her tiny, water-chapped hands, her dark eyes staring into Julian’s face with an absolute, terrifying lack of fear.

"Don't hurt my mama," Mia said, her voice clear and unbroken. "Mr. Duca will kill you."

Julian paused, stunned by the child's sudden intervention.

That single second saved our lives.

I lunged across the stainless steel table, my body slamming into Julian like a freight train, driving us both through the wooden side door into the dark, rain-soaked courtyard outside.
