Chapter 3

I know what it looked like because I had seen the marking produce the same reaction in other rooms. It does not look like something decorative. It does not look like something a motor pool specialist would have. It looks like what it is, which is the documentation of eleven years of service at levels that most of the soldiers in that motor pool would not be cleared to know existed, sewn into the skin of someone who had been holding a seventy-pound duffel bag for twenty-two minutes without dropping it while Hayes narrated her inadequacy to an audience.

The soldier nearest me on the left was a staff sergeant named Kowalski who had been at the base for fourteen months and who had, I learned later, been one of four soldiers who submitted written documentation to the IG's office about a previous incident involving a different specialist. He lost color when he saw the marking. The color left his face in stages, the way it leaves a person who is rapidly revising a very large number of assumptions.

The one to my right was younger, a corporal on his first posting, who said what he said under his breath in the specific register of someone who has recognized something and cannot contain the recognition.

Hayes was still holding what remained of my sleeve.

He looked at the marking.

I watched his face do the thing that faces do when the framework that has been organizing their reality encounters information that the framework cannot accommodate. The rage that had been operating his expression for the preceding half hour was not replaced exactly. It was interrupted, and into the interruption came a calculation, and the calculation was producing outputs that were visibly not what he had anticipated when he reached for my shoulder.

I looked at him.

"You should have checked who you were humiliating," I said.

The sentence was quiet. That was intentional. The watching soldiers needed to hear it, and quiet carried farther than volume in a silence that total.

May you like

Hayes released my sleeve.

His hand dropped to his side.
