Chapter 2

"Step away from the fifty-million-dollar aircraft, ma'am! Hands where I can see them! Do it now!"
The voice came from ten yards behind me, young, male, tight with adrenaline and protocol. I did not turn around immediately. Every millimeter of rotation in my torso sent a white-hot spike of pain through my left side that made the concussion feel like a minor inconvenience by comparison. I breathed through it the way I had learned to breathe through things that hurt: slowly, deliberately, giving the body no more attention than it absolutely required.
Heavy boots on concrete. Before I could plant my feet, a gloved hand closed on my right shoulder and yanked me backward hard enough to spin me around. The torque rattled my skull and the tarmac swam black for a half second before I blinked it back.
Standing in front of me was a Security Forces sergeant who looked twenty-three years old at the outside, nameplate reading VANCE, his M4 at the low-ready, knuckles white on the grip. His eyes were doing what young security personnel eyes do in the first seconds of a situation they haven't encountered before: reading threat level, reading compliance, reading everything except the one thing that would have actually explained what he was looking at.
"ID," he said. "Base badge. Right now."

"Don't have it," I said. My voice came out like gravel. "Lost it in the dirt about six miles east of the perimeter."
His jaw tightened. He reached for his shoulder radio with his free hand while keeping his grip locked on my collarbone. "Dispatch, this is Unit Four. I have an unauthorized female on Pad Nine, making direct physical contact with Bird 802. Suspect is injured, non-compliant, refusing identification—"
"That's my bird, Vance," I said quietly.
He paused long enough for me to watch him process the sentence and decide it was the most audacious thing a non-compliant injured civilian had ever said to him on a restricted flight line, and that it changed nothing.
Then the klaxon hit.
