She Walked Down the Aisle With Proof in Her Bouquet

The house was almost empty, but not quiet.

Downstairs, workers were arranging white roses in the ballroom. Somewhere near the terrace, a string quartet rehearsed the same soft section again and again. The smell of flowers, waxed floors, and expensive perfume filled the halls.

I slipped upstairs without turning on extra lights.

The guest room was exactly as I had left it.

My cashmere coat hung inside the closet, folded over a padded hanger like someone had placed it there on purpose.

I reached for it.

Then I heard Ryan’s laugh.

It came through the slightly open connecting door that led into Margaret’s private office.

I froze.

I knew I should have stepped away.

But something in his laugh stopped me.

It was not the laugh he used with me.

It was lighter.

Then Margaret spoke.

“After tomorrow, she will not have the leverage to keep refusing.”

My fingers tightened around the coat.

Ryan answered, “She’ll sign whatever we put in front of her once she’s my wife.”

A third male voice chuckled. Their attorney, I realized. Conrad Vale. The man who had smiled at me that afternoon while pushing documents across a table.

“The revised agreement gives the family forty-one percent immediately,” Conrad said. “The rest can be forced through pressure over time.”

Margaret’s voice stayed smooth.

“Claire still believes this wedding is about love.”

Ryan laughed again.

“Within a year, Harper Logistics belongs to us.”

For a moment, I could not move.

Every kiss.

Every promise.

Every late-night conversation about our future.

All of it rearranged itself in my mind into something colder.

I had not been loved.
