Chapter 7 - No Child Left Behind
Rachel eventually pleaded guilty to child endangerment and fraud-related charges connected to the misuse of the twins’ survivor funds. The criminal case moved slowly, as such cases do, but the facts never became kinder with time. She had not broken in one impulsive moment. She had planned an exit. The airport was simply where the plan met a witness she could not control.
Hannah received permanent guardianship six months later.
James and Marco attended the hearing in civilian suits and sat quietly in the back. Owen spent the entire morning trying to sit still in a shirt with too many buttons. Lily held the judge’s pencil by mistake and solemnly returned it as if concluding serious diplomatic business. When the order was signed, Hannah cried, the twins looked confused for a second, and then Lily asked, “So now nobody can take us away at the airport?”
The judge smiled. “That’s right.”
Years later, James would still remember the first real laugh he heard from them.
It came at O’Hare again, of all places, nearly a year after the abandonment. Hannah had brought the twins to Chicago during spring break because James insisted they see the aquarium, the river and “a city that once behaved very badly and then corrected itself.” At the airport, Owen marched beside him with the teddy bear tucked under one arm, and Lily swung Hannah’s hand while talking about school, spelling words and the caterpillar she had saved from a puddle.
They passed Gate 17 on the way to baggage claim.
Lily slowed for only a moment. Then she looked up at James. “This is where you found us.”
He looked down at her. “No. This is where you were seen.”
She seemed to consider that carefully, then smiled the way children do when a sentence has given them something solid to keep.
Before they left, Owen saluted him with all the seriousness his father once had.
James returned the salute.

For once in his life, the Army had given him a promise he could keep long after the mission ended.
