Chapter 6 - The Parents Who Chose the Photograph

Mom came to my house four days after the wedding.

Dad sat beside her on the couch.

Neither asked to see Lily.

My daughter was upstairs with a therapist specializing in child trauma.

Mom folded her hands.

“You need to stop cooperating with people trying to destroy your sister.”

“I gave police the evidence they requested.”

“You gave them ammunition.”

“Vanessa hit a child.”

“She lost control for one second.”

“And you defended her for the next four days.”

Dad finally spoke.

“Your mother is only trying to keep the family together.”

I looked at him.

“What family?”

His mouth closed.

Mom began crying.

“Grant left her. Her business is falling apart. She may be charged.”

“Those are consequences.”

“She is your sister.”

“Lily is my daughter.”

Mom stared at me as if I had chosen the wrong side of an argument.

That was when I understood she truly believed family roles mattered more than behavior.

Vanessa was the daughter to protect.

I was the daughter expected to absorb the damage.

Lily was simply the newest person they assumed could be sacrificed to preserve that arrangement.

“You asked me to apologize after watching her strike my child,” I said. “You will not be alone with Lily again.”

Mom’s face hardened.

“You’re punishing us.”

“No. I’m limiting access.”

Dad looked toward the staircase.

“Can we at least say goodbye to her?”

“No.”

The word surprised all three of us.

It also freed me.
