Chapter 8 - "I KNOW EXACTLY WHO HE IS"

The afternoon sun dipped below the crest of the desert mountains, casting long, dramatic crimson shadows across the wet pavement of the gas station. The bright, golden light was gone, replaced by the cool, twilight glow of the impending night.

Claire looked at the giant man towering over her. The emotional vulnerable father was gone; standing before her now was the feared, lethal biker whose reputation echoed across the Southwestern highways.

"Claire," Everett said, his voice flat, dangerously calm, and laced with pure steel. "Who is the man standing beside Emily in this picture?"

Claire looked down at the hidden screen, frowning in confusion. "That's... that's Arthur. He was the administrator who arranged Emily's adoption. He was a close friend of my adoptive parents. He oversaw her file."

Everett slowly raised his eyes from the glowing phone screen.

His gaze locked onto Claire’s face. His dark eyes were no longer crying; they were burning with a lethal, icy intelligence that made Claire’s breath hitch in her throat.

"Arthur..." Everett repeated, the name sounding like a death sentence on his lips.

"Do you... do you know him?" Claire asked, her voice trembling.

Everett let go of her wrist, taking a slow step back toward his matte-black Harley. He reached down and rested his heavy, ringed hand on the throttle grip, his leather vest open against the cool desert breeze.

"I know exactly who he is," Everett said, every word measured and heavy.

Claire stared at him, her mind whirling with sudden, terrifying implications. "What are you talking about? He helped my family! He saved Emily after the fire!"

Everett let out a dark, humorless laugh that sounded like dry gravel grinding together.

"He didn't save her, Claire," Everett said, looking back at the hidden photograph on the phone screen one last time before Claire defensively pulled it away. "Arthur was my club's accountant in nineteen-ninety-nine. He was the man who signed the insurance releases on my house three days before it burned down."

Claire gasped, her hand flying to her mouth, her eyes darting to her daughter Junie, who was watching the adults with wide, innocent eyes.

"He lied to me," Everett whispered, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, reawakened rage. "He faked my daughter's death. He stole my seven-year-old girl, handed her to your family, and made me live in hell for twelve years."
