Chapter 3

Within eleven minutes, Reyes confirmed the warrants were already moving, the ones we'd prepared months earlier on the assumption that someday, somehow, I would find proof Lena hadn't died in that car. Within forty minutes, two investigators in unmarked coats were waiting discreetly near the hotel's service entrance with Lena's real medical records, pulled quietly from a clinic two counties over where my mother's property manager, unaware he was being watched, had taken her for a checkup during her pregnancy and signed the intake form with his own name.
I left Lena and Grace with a private security detail Reyes trusted completely, two former agents who didn't ask questions, and I drove to the board dinner exactly on schedule, exactly as my mother expected, wearing a navy suit and a face I'd practiced in two years of mirrors.

Evelyn Ashford stood at the head of the private dining room when I walked in, champagne in hand, holding court the way she always did, surrounded by board members who owed their positions to her approval. She smiled when she saw me.
"There you are. I was beginning to worry."
"I had a stop to make," I said.
We made it through the appetizer course before Reyes's team arrived, four federal agents walking calmly through the restaurant's private entrance with a warrant for Dr. Mercer's records, financial transfer documentation linking Evelyn's personal account to a property outside Millbrook registered under her sister's maiden name, and a sealed statement from a former groundskeeper who'd finally agreed to talk once he understood the protection he'd been offered.
My mother's champagne glass stopped halfway to her lips.
"Daniel," she said carefully, "what is this?"
May you like
I stood, and for the first time in two years, I let her see exactly what had been underneath the grief the entire time.
"Lena's alive," I said. "She's been alive for two years. You had her held at the Millbrook property. You paid Dr. Mercer to falsify a death certificate so I'd inherit alone, so there'd be no wife, no child, no one standing between you and full control of the board. I have the property records. I have the medical clinic intake form. I have Mercer's actual signature beside the forged one, and I have eleven months of financial transfers from your personal account to a contractor who renovated a house you supposedly haven't visited in a decade."
