Chapter 13 - THE CHOICE

Olivia Shaw did not create Rachel’s mirror flag.

She did reveal why it existed early.

The Systems Working Group had been trying to fix a recurring problem:

Late scratches left timing profiles locked.

Exhibition athletes needed safe test identities.

The group recommended:

Synthetic placeholder profiles.

Then an IT developer demonstrated a mirror function using a real athlete account.

Rachel Carter’s.

Why Rachel?

Olivia laughed without humor.

“Because your profile was open in the test database.”

No sinister selection.

Rachel had been the last athlete loaded during the demo.

The developer clicked her.

Created a test mirror.

Then supposedly deleted it.

But the replacement eligible flag survived.

That was September 24.

Weeks before Lauren Vale.

Cross later discovered the flag was still there.

Instead of removing it—

he used it.

The origin was almost insultingly ordinary.

Rachel had spent days asking:

Why me?

Answer:

Because her row was open.

Then Cross turned accident into habit.

The independent review reached its final stage.

Investigators could publicly issue a full crosswalk.

Every Carter mirror use.

Real person.

Reason.

Administrative hold.

Medical status.

Registration failure.

Training purpose.

That would clear Rachel completely.

No ambiguity.

It would also expose Nina’s medical restriction.

Another former athlete’s academic eligibility issue.

Maya’s transfer paperwork.

Lauren Vale’s private performance testing.

People who had not agreed to become public examples.

Rachel’s lawyer asked:

“What do you want?”

“Everything corrected.”

“That can happen without names.”

“I want people to know I wasn’t running those times.”

“They can.”

“I want proof.”

“The independent report can state that.”

Rachel stared at the sealed crosswalk.

For days she had demanded names.

Then watched what her post did to Nina.

Nina joined remotely.

“I don't want my asthma history published.”

Rachel nodded.

“It won't be.”

Vanessa laughed once from across the table.

“Now you care about privacy.”

Rachel turned.

“Yes.”

No defense.

Vanessa looked surprised.

Rachel continued.

“I should've cared before.”

That ended it.

Rachel agreed to a public report containing:

All misuse dates.

All system failures.

All decision roles.

All corrected Rachel records.

No unnecessary athlete names.

The sealed appendix would remain available to investigators, governing bodies and affected athletes.

Rachel also gave one statement she did not enjoy.

She knowingly signed the 2024 correction without understanding the full procedure because she wanted the team’s relay export finalized.

She then told a teammate not to make the issue bigger.

That did not authorize Cross’s later conduct.

It did become part of how the shortcut survived.

Vanessa provided her own full statement.

She had participated in Maya’s mirror race.

Nina’s unauthorized all-out test.

Later explained the Carter shell to Jordan Parker.

Then attacked Rachel at the alumni event because she wanted Rachel gone before the old system drew questions.

Her responsibility was heavier.

Vanessa knew it.

Then she faced a choice too.

Her attorney advised saying nothing further about Cross’s private instructions unless subpoenaed.

Possible.

Instead she turned over a personal notebook from college.

Training schedules.

Cross’s texts.

One line from after Nina’s incident:

No more medical holds in Carter. Admin/exhibition only.

That partly helped Cross.

It showed he recognized a boundary afterward.

It also proved he knew exactly what “Carter” meant.

A person had become shorthand for a workaround.

Rachel read the line.

May you like

Then closed the notebook.

That was enough.
