Chapter 7

I had not planned for him to find out this way.

I had planned for the shot. I had planned for the silence that followed. The rest had simply arrived on its own schedule, which was how most of the things that mattered in my life had arrived — not because I engineered them but because I had been ready when they did.

The formal inquiry into the course environment ran for six weeks. Harland was reassigned to an administrative training role that did not involve recruits. Bishop received a written reprimand for the social media post, which under the conduct standards applicable to active training courses was a more serious document than it appeared — it joined a file that would follow him through the remainder of his career and would be read by people who had not been there to see his face in the moment it was issued.

The photograph — the one with the marker across my chest — became an exhibit.

I finished Fort Camden's sniper course. I qualified at the top of the cohort across every distance category, which surprised no one who had been paying attention, and surprised everyone who had been doing anything other than paying attention.

Roark sent me a letter three weeks after the course ended. It was short. It said that he had spent three years believing there were twelve names on the memorial and that he had recently had occasion to revise the count.

He said twelve was still the right number.

But one of them was still writing her name in the present tense.

I kept the letter.

I kept the photograph with the marker across my chest.

I kept them both in the same place I kept everything that was worth keeping — not because I needed them to remember but because remembering on your own terms is different from letting other people decide when you are allowed to forget.

The range at Fort Camden would have another cohort in the spring. New recruits. New instructors. A different set of assumptions arriving with the first morning's boots on gravel.

Whether those assumptions would be different was a question that would answer itself.

I had done my part of the answering.

The rest was up to the people who had been watching.
