Chapter 3

My father answered on the second ring. He always answered on the second ring. "Vivian," he said.
"He said the marriage is a deal," I said. "I'd like to discuss the terms."
Silence on the line for three seconds. Then my father said: "Put him on speaker."
I pressed the button. The room listened.
My father's voice came through the phone with the unhurried quality of a man who has spent forty years having conversations where the other person discovers, partway through, that they have misunderstood the nature of what they walked into. He said hello to Adrian. Adrian said hello back with the residual confidence of a man who had just explained himself to his wife and believed the explanation had settled something.
My father said: "I understand you've described my daughter's marriage as a deal."
Adrian said he had simply been honest about the structure of the arrangement.
My father said: "Good. Let's be honest about the Hart family's structure as well." He paused. "The Hart private trust did not retire from active management. The Hart private trust reorganized its public profile. There is a difference. Blackwell Meridian's pre-IPO financing round has two institutional anchors. One of them holds its capital through a vehicle called Meridian Bridge Partners. Meridian Bridge Partners is administered by a trust you have not been introduced to. That trust is mine."

Adrian went very still.
My father continued at the same pace. "I also sit on the advisory committee of your lead underwriter, a fact that was not disclosed to you through the standard channels because I prefer to understand the character of people before I make myself visible to them. Tonight has been informative." Another pause. "My daughter carries a specific clause in her prenuptial agreement that I had drafted by a partner at Sullivan and Cromwell. The clause activates upon documented evidence of marital misconduct preceding or concurrent with the wedding date. A hotel suite shared by a husband and his secretary on the wedding night, witnessed and documented, constitutes that evidence under the language of the clause."
Sienna's expression had undergone several revisions in the preceding ninety seconds. She was no longer smiling.
"The clause," my father said, "entitles Vivian to a negotiated exit from the marriage that includes a position on the Blackwell Meridian board for three years during the post-IPO period, a settlement figure that your counsel will find has been calculated with considerable precision, and my personal withdrawal from the Meridian Bridge Partners advisory commitment, which your lead underwriter will interpret as a confidence signal moving in the wrong direction two weeks before the offering."

Adrian's jaw had tightened to the specific angle of a man who has understood that the ground he was standing on was never what he thought it was.
"I built this company," he said. His voice had lost some of its certainty.
