Chapter 6 - The Emails Grace Had Saved

I thought that would be the end of it.

Vanessa would leave.

Daniel would grieve.

The wedding would become an embarrassing canceled event whispered about for a season.

But Vanessa had not come to my garden alone in spirit.

She had come armed with a larger plan.

Grace Whitmore arrived twenty minutes later, wearing a navy suit and the expression of a lawyer who preferred documents over drama but would use drama if forced. Daniel had called her from the terrace while Vanessa stood near the fountain, shaking with fury and pretending she was the injured party.

Grace carried a slim folder.

“Before anyone leaves,” she said, “I need to inform Miss Vanessa Hart and her sister that a preservation notice has been issued regarding electronic communications, financial documents, and property-transfer drafts connected to Mrs. Evelyn Carter’s home and trust.”

Vanessa’s head snapped up.

“You can’t do that.”

Grace looked at her. “I can. I did.”

Daniel stared at the folder.

“What property-transfer drafts?”

Grace’s gaze softened slightly.

“Daniel, your mother has been targeted for months.”

He looked ill.

Grace opened the folder but did not hand over anything readable to the crowd gathered near the terrace. She summarized with cold precision.

Emails between Vanessa, Chloe, Vanessa’s cousin Peter, and a real estate attorney.

Messages discussing how to convince Daniel I was declining mentally.

Draft language describing an “intergenerational transfer for family stability.”

A plan to move the mansion into Daniel’s name before the wedding, then use the marriage to pressure access into the maintenance trust Thomas created for my care.

And one message from Vanessa that made Daniel grip the back of a garden chair.

Once his mother signs, she becomes sentimental furniture. Daniel will never put her out, but we can make every decision around her.

I saw my son bend under those words.

Not because they insulted me.

Because he realized how long he had been useful to someone who never loved him.

Vanessa looked at him with naked panic now.

“Daniel, emails can be taken out of context.”

Grace said, “Security footage rarely is.”

I touched my shortened hair.

The garden cameras had captured the scissors.

The threats.

The forced performance.

The lie about pregnancy.

Everything.

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

For months, she had taught him to doubt my tone, my memory, my boundaries, my grief.

Now all he had left to doubt was himself.
