Chapter 8 - The True Choice

I stared at him, my mind spinning as the pieces of the last four years fell into place.

"You... you paid my family's debt three years ago?" I whispered, my voice shaking with emotion. "Why didn't you tell me? Why let me keep cleaning these floors?"

"Because I needed to be sure," Adrian answered, his dark eyes burning with an intense, raw honesty. "In my world, everyone wears a mask. My family, my advisers, my business partners... even the women who came here tonight looking for a crown. Everyone wants something from Adrian Vale."

He stepped closer, his warm fingers gently resting against the side of my face, his thumb tracing my jawline.

"Except you," Adrian continued softly. "You watched me every night. You learned my habits, my burdens, my secrets. You protected the hidden passage because you cared about the safety of this house, not because you wanted a piece of its fortune."

"I am just a housekeeper, Adrian," I whispered, using his first name for the very first time in four years.

"You were a housekeeper yesterday, Nora," Adrian corrected, his voice dropping into a deep, unyielding tone. "Tonight, you saved my life. You proved you possess more loyalty, intelligence, and courage than every mob family in New Jersey combined."

He reached into his vest pocket, pulled out a small velvet box, and opened it.

Inside lay not a diamond ring, nor an expensive piece of estate jewelry, but an ancient brass key attached to a heavy iron signet ring bearing the crest of the Vale family.

It was the key to the iron vault beneath the floorboards.

"There were seven women in this house tonight, Nora," Adrian said, holding the velvet box out to me. "None of them understood what matters. I am offering you the key to my house, my family, and my life."

I looked at the ancient brass key, then raised my eyes to look into the face of the most feared man in Philadelphia.

"If I take this key, Adrian," I said softly, my hazel eyes locking onto his, "I won't stay in the shadows anymore."

"I don't want you in the shadows, Nora," Adrian smiled—a real, genuine, breathtaking smile that transformed his hard features into something warm and devastatingly handsome. "I want you beside me at the head of the table."
