Chapter 1 - She Walked Back In Alive

Seventy-two hours after Alpha Squad left Evelyn Blackwell behind in the Arizona desert, the doors of Echo Base opened, and the sound inside the hangar died so completely it felt as if the building itself had stopped breathing.
The first thing they noticed was the gear.
Captain Harrison Garrett’s tactical pack hung from her right shoulder. Hayes’s sniper case was strapped across her back. Mitchell’s demolitions kit rode against her damaged vest. Reeves’s navigation equipment swung from her left hand.
And across her shoulders, half-conscious and barely breathing, was Master Sergeant Nathaniel Reeves.
Mechanics froze beside the fuel carts. Two medics stopped short in front of a supply pallet. A crew chief holding a clipboard lowered it without realizing his hand had gone slack. No one spoke as Evelyn crossed the concrete with sand grinding beneath her boots.
Her sleeves were torn. Her face was streaked with dust and dried blood. Her auburn hair had come loose from its regulation bun and clung to her jaw in uneven strands. But her eyes were still steady. Gray-green. Focused. Unshaken.
“Medical,” she said.
The word landed like an order.
The medics surged forward and transferred Reeves onto a gurney. One of them took a quick look at the field dressing on his thigh and then stared back at Evelyn.
“Who did this?”
“I did.”
The medic checked it again, then shook his head in disbelief. “This kept him from losing the leg.”
Evelyn’s face didn’t change. “It kept him from dying first.”
Then Garrett stepped out from the cluster of stunned operators. Seventy-two hours earlier, he had been the man giving orders. Now he looked like a man trying to find a sentence that didn’t exist.
“Blackwell—”
She pulled his pack off her shoulder and let it hit the floor at his feet.
“Your maps.”
Then Hayes’s rifle case.
“His rifle.”
Then Mitchell’s explosives.
“His gear.”
Finally, Reeves’s navigation kit.

“And the man you left behind.”
No one moved. No one dared rescue Garrett from the silence.
