Chapter 4

He dropped not into the down command position, which was precise and alert and maintained operational readiness, but into the involuntary collapse of a body that has encountered something it needed to be closer to. His muzzle came down. His tail lay flat. His eyes stayed on the man's face with the complete, uninterrupted attention of an animal that has stopped distributing its awareness across the environment because this one point has claimed all of it.
The soldiers behind the working lane went silent.
Not gradually. Completely.
Hollis said it quietly, to himself as much as to anyone.
"That can't be possible."
The man in the bite jacket was already kneeling. He moved carefully, with the measured pace of someone who understands that abrupt movement is wrong here, whose body has made this assessment faster than his thinking had.
He reached out.

His right hand, the one with the two missing fingers, came to rest on top of Rex's head.
Rex pressed into it.
The pressure was visible — the dog's head moving against the hand in the way that contact moves against contact when it has been the thing that was absent, when the absence has been the operative state for two years and now the absence has resolved into the opposite of itself.
Aiden was looking at the man. He was looking at the way Rex was behaving and he was looking at the man's right hand and he was running the arithmetic that the arithmetic kept coming out the same way on regardless of how many times he ran it.
He did not speak.
Nobody on the demonstration field spoke.

The man kept his hand on Rex's head and the dog kept pressing into it and the soldiers who had come to watch a demonstration of military working dog capability stood with their clipboards and their training notebooks and their evaluative attention, and none of them had a category for what they were watching.
I am going to finish this story in the way that things like this finish, which is to say: slowly, across several months, with documentation and verification and the specific patience required when the thing being verified is something that several official records have been built around the assumption of.
