Chapter 5

Brittany looked at the officers and then at me and I could see her constructing it in real time, the version of the story that began with my behavior in the hallway, the version where the phone in my jacket was a piece of evidence she could shape.

I reached into my pocket and held the phone toward the officers.

"I called before he swung," I said.

Brittany went still.

She had been so focused on Andrew, on the officers, on the geometry of who was standing where, that she had not clocked the phone. She looked at it now in my hand, at the active voice memo still recording, at the timestamp that showed eleven minutes and forty-three seconds of continuous audio beginning from the moment I reached the landing.

"You recorded everything?" she said.

Her voice had lost the construction in it. It was just the question, bare.

I turned to look at her for the first time since I had come up the stairs.

"No," I said. "You did."

The officers moved through the room with their clipboards and their questions, and the night became a sequence of procedural things: the statements, the ambulance that came for Andrew because protocol required it even though he stood up on his own and his face showed nothing that required stitching, the moment when the female officer looked at the active recording on my phone and asked me to describe the timeline from the beginning, and I described it from the beginning, and the timeline was not ambiguous.

Andrew was cited for assault. He gave a statement at the scene that contradicted Brittany's in three places and was consistent with mine in every detail that mattered.

Brittany stood in our bedroom in her robe while the officers finished, and I watched her understand, incrementally, that the story she had been composing in her head since the moment I appeared in the doorway was not the story the phone had recorded. The phone had recorded a husband who came home, said his wife's name without anger, climbed the stairs without rushing, asked for an explanation without shouting, stepped aside when asked, and been struck without provocation.

The phone had recorded everything she had said in the hallway.

Both of them.
