Chapter 1 - The Man Behind The Plaster

I heard Lily say, “Mom, stop,” before I reached the bedroom.
Vanessa had both hands around our daughter’s arm.
Not hurting her exactly.
Pulling hard enough that Lily’s shoes slid across the polished floor.
Away from the old walnut cabinet.
“Vanessa.”
She turned.
The panic on her face arrived before the anger.
I moved toward Lily.
Vanessa slapped me.
Hard.
My head snapped sideways.
Then she shoved me in the chest.
I stumbled backward and hit the cabinet with my back.
The entire thing moved less than an inch.
Vanessa immediately stepped between me and it.
“Don’t touch that wall.”
I stared at her.
We had been married eleven years.
I had heard Vanessa angry.
Afraid.
Humiliated.
Once, after Lily disappeared inside a department store for ninety seconds, I had watched fear remove every civilized word from her vocabulary.
This was different.
She wasn't looking at me.
She was looking behind me.
At the cabinet.
“Dad,” Lily whispered.
I pushed away from the wood.
“What’s behind it?”
Vanessa said, “Nothing.”
Lily said, “Mom.”
Vanessa looked at her.
That one word carried a warning.
I saw it.
So did Lily.
I moved toward the cabinet.
Vanessa blocked me.
“Daniel.”
“Move.”
“We have contractors coming tomorrow.”
“Then this is excellent timing.”
I knocked her arm aside and caught both edges of the cabinet.
It was heavier than I expected.
The legs screamed against the floor as I dragged it sideways.
Vanessa went white.
Behind it was a bare section of wall.
No painting.
No outlet.
Nothing.
Lily stared at it.
Then said:
“Mom talks to you through there.”
I froze.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
I looked at my daughter.
“What?”
Lily pointed.
“At night.”
I put one hand against the wall.
“I’ve never been in there.”
Vanessa grabbed Lily again.
“We’re leaving.”
I stepped into the doorway.
“No.”
She released Lily, shoved me sideways, and tried to get between me and the exposed wall again.
I caught myself.
“What are you protecting?”
“Nothing.”
“Then stop protecting it.”
Near the renovation supplies beside the closet was a sledgehammer the crew had left that morning.
I picked it up.
Vanessa grabbed my forearm.
“Daniel, don’t.”
I looked at her.
For the first time, her anger cracked.
Underneath it was terror.
“Why?”
She couldn't answer.
I pulled free.
Vanessa came back at me.
I shoved her away.
She stumbled several steps and fell back into the upholstered chair near the bed.
Lily screamed my name.
I swung once.
Plaster cracked.
Vanessa made a sound I had never heard from her.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
I struck the same section again.
A large piece broke inward.
Dust rolled into the room.
Behind the wall was darkness.
Not insulation.
Not studs.
Space.
A narrow room.
Maybe four feet deep from where I stood.
An old light fixture hung from the ceiling.
Farther inside was a metal door.
Closed.
I lowered the hammer.
Lily moved behind me.
Vanessa stood slowly.
She stared into the opening.
Her face had emptied.
I stepped closer.
The light inside switched on.
All three of us froze.
The metal door became visible.
Someone was on the other side of it.
Then a man's voice came through the room.
Calm.
Older than mine.
“Daniel…”
My grip tightened around the hammer.
“You weren’t the one I was expecting.”
Lily pressed against my back.
Vanessa whispered:
“Please.”
I turned toward her.
“Who is that?”
She didn't answer.
I looked into the opening.
“Come out.”
Nothing.
“Who are you?”
The man spoke again.
Not to me.
“Vanessa.”
Her eyes filled.
“I told you not today,” she said.
My stomach dropped.
She knew him.
The voice answered:
“You told me Daniel wouldn’t be home until six.”
I looked at my wife.
It was 4:18.
Vanessa stared at the floor.
I stepped through the broken wall.
“Open the door.”
A metallic sound came from deeper inside.
Not the door in front of me.
Something beyond it.
Then the man said:
“Vanessa, I checked the place you showed me.”
She stopped breathing.
“What?”
May you like
His next words made her grab the edge of the broken wall.
“It’s not where you left it.”
