Chapter 5 - WHY LUCAS STOPPED TALKING TO ME

Daniel knew Lucas had not destroyed the drive.

Not immediately.

But he suspected.

And suspicion was enough.

He began asking Lucas whether he trusted him.

Whether he loved him.

Whether he understood how much damage his mother had caused.

Then he introduced the worst threat possible for a child whose entire world had always included his twin brother.

“If your mother gets custody,” Daniel told him one night, “the judge could split you and Mason.”

That was a lie.

But Lucas was nine.

Then Daniel added another.

“If you cause trouble, Mason may decide he wants to stay here without you.”

Lucas believed him.

That was why he became quiet.

Not because he had stopped loving me.

Because he thought every word risked losing his brother.

During visits, he watched Mason constantly.

If Mason started telling me something about Daniel’s house, Lucas interrupted.

If I asked whether Dad had been angry, Lucas said everything was fine.

He was not protecting Daniel.

He was protecting Mason.

I understood none of this while it happened.

I thought parental alienation was stealing my son.

The truth was worse.

Daniel had turned Lucas into the keeper of a secret too frightening for a child to carry.

The only person Lucas finally told was the court-appointed child advocate.

Not everything.

Just one sentence.

“I have something Dad doesn’t want the judge to see.”

That was why Judge Mercer asked him directly where he felt safest.

It was not a routine question.

She was giving Lucas the opening he had been waiting for.

And Daniel realized it one second before I did.
