Chapter 8 - WHY STEVE NEEDED ME TO BE THE VILLAIN
The real explanation was embarrassingly ordinary.
Steve’s trucking company had been failing.
Fuel costs increased.
One truck needed a transmission.
A large customer paid sixty days late.
Steve had a tax problem he had hidden from Emily because she would have told him to close the business sooner.
Mom’s repair reserve was sitting there.
Accessible.
He told himself he would borrow from it for two weeks.
Then four.
Then eight.
He repaid part.
Borrowed again.
By the time I noticed, replacing everything immediately would have meant admitting the company was in worse condition than he told anyone.
So he attacked the question instead of answering it.
If Ryan was controlling, Steve was not deceptive.
If Ryan was trying to take over Mom’s finances, Steve was protecting her.
If Ryan was angry and selfish, nobody needed to ask why Steve moved money without permission.
The family estrangement had another benefit.
As long as I was not around, nobody compared account information.
Mom trusted Steve’s summaries.
Jenna and Kyle assumed I had stopped helping.
I assumed Mom wanted me away.
Everyone lived inside separate versions.
Steve became indispensable in all of them.
Emily showed Mom the records the day after Thanksgiving.
Mom removed Steve’s bill-pay access immediately.
The remaining money was not gone.
Steve had repaid several thousand over the year.
He still owed a little over eight.
There was no dramatic criminal case.
Mom did not call the police.
She wanted her money returned and her brother out of her financial affairs.
Steve sold one truck and repaid the remainder over several months.
His business closed.
He retired earlier than he wanted.
Those were consequences.
Not revenge.
The deeper consequence was that the family stopped letting Steve act as translator.
If he said:
“Mom feels…”
Someone asked Mom.
If he said:
“Ryan said…”
Someone called me.
It sounds absurd.
That basic.
But manipulation gets much harder when adults begin checking original sources.
Steve hated the change.
For years, he had gained importance by standing between people.
