Chapter 6 - What Was Actually On The USB

There was no secret video of Evelyn planning to steal my fortune.

No second husband.

No forged will.

Reality was more intimate.

The USB contained a pattern of edited relationships.

Voicemails from Evelyn to Genevieve:

“Your father needs distance.”

“He thinks you only call when money or doctors are involved.”

“He specifically asked that you stop questioning the wedding.”

Emails from Genevieve to Evelyn that I had never seen:

I’m not asking Dad to cancel anything. I want to talk to him directly.

Please tell him Toby misses him.

I’m worried he thinks I stopped calling after the hospital.

Then messages Evelyn sent me:

Genevieve is still angry about the wedding.

She thinks the residency agreement gives me too much.

She says Toby is confused by all the changes.

Some contained fragments of truth.

That was why they worked.

Then came the file that hurt most.

A voicemail Genevieve left for me six months earlier.

“Dad, I don’t know whether you’re hearing these. Evelyn keeps saying you want space. If that is true, I’ll respect it. But I love you. Toby asks for you every morning. Please call me yourself when you’re ready.”

I had never heard it.

Evelyn had access to the shared home phone system at the time.

Technical review later could not prove she deliberately deleted that specific voicemail.

I did not need to prove every mechanism.

Because another message existed.

Genevieve texted Evelyn minutes afterward:

Please make sure Dad gets that.

Evelyn replied:

I will.

She didn’t.

Then the residency agreement.

Evelyn wanted the right to remain in my primary home for life if I died before her, with taxes and major maintenance paid by a marital trust.

That was not monstrous.

After I understood her history, I understood exactly why she wanted it.

What mattered was that she told both Raymond and me that Genevieve had “no objection.”

Genevieve had never been asked.

The last file was an email Evelyn wrote to her own attorney:

Thomas is too emotionally tied to Genevieve to set boundaries if she is in front of him. Once we’re married, things will settle because there will finally be a clear hierarchy.

Hierarchy.

I read that word five times.

I had thought I was marrying a partner.

Evelyn thought marriage would settle who came first by giving her a formal rank.

Then I understood why she grabbed Toby.

Why she told me he lied.

Why Genevieve’s questions enraged her.

It was not only greed.

It was hierarchy.

And she had mistaken becoming my wife for becoming the authority through which my family reached me.

The ugliest part?

I had helped teach her that.

For months, I had let Evelyn deliver messages because I was tired of conflict.

She became gatekeeper because I kept handing her gates.
