Chapter 14 - CHILD TWO

Miles reached the shuttered records wing forty minutes before investigators. Arden Medical Center no longer operated under Malcolm’s family control, but an older annex remained closed awaiting demolition. Security footage showed Miles entering with an access card issued years earlier to trust counsel.

Sylvester did not go chasing him through the building. Rebecca and law enforcement made sure of that. The climax belonged to records and choices, not to a fistfight that would turn eight years of conspiracy into one moment of anger.

Agents found Miles in the basement archive beside two open banker’s boxes and a portable shredder.

He had destroyed several duplicates.

He had not reached the original Northgate emergency packet.

The packet contained the complete timeline.

At 2:11 a.m., both Stallone infants were transferred from neonatal care during the blackout.

At 2:48, Child One—Evan—was located in a surgical recovery bay.

At 3:02, Grace Reed discovered Child Two missing from his temporary bassinet.

At 3:17, Miles Trent entered the neonatal security area using family-counsel authorization.

At 3:31, he requested private vehicle access through P-7.

At 3:46, Grace was instructed by a supervisor to escort an unnamed premature infant to Brookfield Family Residence for “temporary protected placement.”

At 4:05, Miles used Malcolm Arden’s administrative credentials to create a confidential transfer authorization.

At 5:40, the false neonatal death declaration was executed.

The motive appeared in an email Miles sent himself as a memo draft at 6:08 a.m.

With B unresolved, fund temporarily consolidates under surviving-beneficiary rules. Institutional co-trustee can be avoided pending status determination.

He had not necessarily entered the blackout intending to steal a baby.

He saw an infant temporarily misplaced during chaos and recognized what the unresolved status could do for the trust structure.

Then he made a choice.

Instead of returning Child Two to his family, he converted “missing” into “dead,” moved the baby into private placement and built paperwork backward to support the story.

Malcolm Arden learned enough by morning to stop it.

He did not.

The hospital needed Mercer investment.

Grace Reed resisted and was removed.

Julia later discovered the inconsistencies.

Miles forged her consent and used her fear of destabilizing Sylvester to delay exposure.

When Julia found Grace, the cover-up began to crack. Miles could not kill the evidence without creating more attention, so he relied on sealed records, legal complexity and time.

Julia died before she could finish.

Grace died before she could safely reveal Leo.

Mason inherited Grace’s fear.

Celeste inherited Malcolm’s guilt.

Evan inherited the photograph.

The conspiracy survived because each person received only enough truth to make silence seem defensible.

Miles was arrested on charges connected to fraud, forgery, trust theft, obstruction and the unlawful concealment of a child. Additional charges depended on jurisdiction and what prosecutors could prove about the original placement.

Malcolm agreed to cooperate. His medical licenses and reputation were already matters for separate proceedings, but he stopped pretending his silence had been about protecting patients.

Celeste gave a sworn statement about Miles’s recent pressure and surrendered every investigative record she had on Leo. Sylvester initiated divorce proceedings the same week.

The Mercer trust was placed under independent control.

Auditors reconstructed two beneficiary accounts from the twins’ birth date forward.

Leo’s legal identity did not automatically become Stallone merely because DNA established biology. That decision would require court procedures and, eventually, Leo’s own preferences. Sylvester insisted on that distinction.

At the final family hearing, the judge asked Leo whether he understood what everyone was discussing.

Leo nodded.

“Do you want to change your name?”

Every adult in the room waited.

Leo looked at Mason first.

Then Sylvester.

Then Evan.

“Not now.”

Sylvester felt something in the room relax.

“Okay,” he said.

Leo looked surprised.

“That’s it?”

May you like

“That’s it.”

For the first time in eight years, an adult learned where Child Two was and did not immediately decide what should happen to him.
