Chapter 6 - THE FAMILY BREAKS OPEN

Alejandro suspended Sebastian’s administrative access within an hour. Sebastian responded through outside counsel, arguing that Alejandro lacked unilateral authority to remove the long-serving trust adviser while his own capacity was under review. The legal dispute spread through Vega Hospitality before either side could contain it.
By evening, reporters knew Alejandro’s food had been tested for sedatives. They also knew Valeria had been seen placing something onto the plate immediately before Mateo stopped his father from eating.
Nobody leaked the harmless-tracer result.
The public story became simpler than the truth: wealthy widower’s girlfriend caught tampering with dinner before family governance crisis.
Lucia accused Sebastian’s office of leaking it. Sebastian denied involvement and issued a carefully worded statement expressing concern for “all members of the Vega family during an emotionally difficult health matter.”
Valeria became the easiest person to hate.
Alejandro asked her to stay at a secure hotel with him and Mateo, but Valeria refused at first. “If I disappear into your suite tonight, every person who already thinks I’m controlling you gets exactly the photograph they want.”
Mateo overheard enough to understand Valeria might leave. He asked whether she was in trouble because he told Alejandro about the bottle.
Valeria knelt beside him. “No. You did exactly what you should have done.”
“But you wanted me to.”
“Yes.”
Alejandro watched his son process that answer and felt his own anger return. Later, after Mateo went to sleep, he confronted Valeria privately. He understood why she wanted the plate preserved, but using Mateo as the trigger had frightened a six-year-old who already lost his mother.
Valeria did not defend the choice. “I thought if I warned you again, you’d call me paranoid. I thought if I confronted the waiter, the plate would disappear. I knew Mateo would tell you because you always believe him.”
“You gambled with him.”
“I did.”
The admission mattered because it stopped Alejandro from turning Valeria into another person whose motives excused everything she did.
Their relationship changed. Alejandro still believed she was trying to protect him, but protection without consent had become the central poison running through the entire story.
Meanwhile Lucia suffered a different consequence. Her husband, Daniel Price, left their apartment with their teenage daughter after reporters appeared outside. He told Lucia he could not keep pretending the Vega family’s internal wars were harmless.
Lucia blamed Alejandro for years of public fights.
Alejandro blamed Lucia for defending Sebastian.
For several hours, the old sibling pattern returned.
Then Lucia’s assistant brought them something that cut through it.
During the previous year, the Vega Family Office had paid for nine “executive wellness transports.” These were private rides used when a family member became ill at events.
Five involved Alejandro.
Four involved Lucia.
Every ride was arranged by Sebastian’s office.
The drivers transported them not to hospitals but to private residences, where concierge physicians later entered notes describing confusion, alcohol sensitivity, migraines, or exhaustion.
One of the physicians, Dr. Paul Renner, had signed two of the medical-capacity certifications attached to the continuity agreement.
Alejandro had met Renner only once.
Lucia had never knowingly been examined by him.
When Sloan tried to contact the doctor, his office said he had left the country unexpectedly.
The consequences of Chapter 5 widened the conspiracy beyond Sebastian’s legal office. Medical professionals, drivers, and administrative staff had been used to create a record around both siblings.
Then Mateo’s school called.
Six weeks earlier, on the morning after one of Alejandro’s memory gaps, someone from the family office had changed Mateo’s emergency contact order.
Alejandro was moved to the bottom.
Sebastian Hale was added near the top.

The change had been approved electronically by Alejandro himself.
He did not remember doing it.
