Chapter 18 - Walter’s Angel

I spent Christmas morning in Evelyn’s office.
My foot throbbed inside the medical boot. Snow tapped against the window. Evelyn’s assistant had left a plate of cookies on the conference table with a handwritten note that said, You are not alone today.
I read that line four times.
Detective Cole arrived at ten with the recorder sealed in an evidence sleeve. The audio had captured Lauren’s threat, the shove, the fall, and her words afterward. He did not play all of it in front of me unless I asked.
I asked.
I needed to hear it once in a room where no one could deny it.
When Lauren’s voice said, “Old women fall every day,” Evelyn closed her eyes.
Detective Cole looked down at his notes.
“We can act on this,” he said.
Evelyn nodded. “But Jeffrey has already filed something.”
She placed a printed petition on the table.
Temporary authority over my medical and financial decisions.
Filed December twenty-fourth.
The morning after my fall.
The petition described my injury as evidence that I could no longer live independently. It requested access to my accounts, authority over the house, and permission to arrange long-term evaluation.
Lauren had created the injury.
Jeffrey had converted it into evidence against me.
That was the twist I had tried not to believe.

My son had not merely failed to protect me from his wife.
He had used what she did.
