Chapter 6 - The Missing Money
Eleanor’s evidence began with the money.
Always begin with the money.
Emotions invite argument.
Numbers force movement.
She laid out six unauthorized transfers totaling $312,000. Each was routed through accounts connected to DV Holdings, a company Daniel had created fifteen months earlier and never disclosed to her. The stated purposes included tax reserves, property maintenance, care coordination, investment transition, and one particularly insulting label: maternal asset protection.
Judge Mercer looked over the summary.
His jaw tightened at the last phrase.
Eleanor continued.
“The source accounts required dual authentication. The secondary access came through a device registered to my former home office laptop, which disappeared from my house after Thanksgiving dinner.”
Daniel’s face flushed.
“That laptop was old. You gave it to me.”
“I did not.”
Vanessa leaned forward. “She forgets things like this constantly.”
Eleanor turned another page.
“I have a photo from the Thanksgiving table timestamped 4:12 p.m. showing the laptop in my study. I have doorbell footage from 7:43 p.m. showing Daniel placing it in the trunk of his car.”
Daniel looked down.
Vanessa’s hand slipped from his arm.
Judge Mercer’s voice was hard. “Mr. Vance.”
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing useful came out.
Eleanor moved to the forged loan.
A personal loan had been opened against a securities account using an authorization package allegedly approved by Eleanor. The proceeds were moved within forty-eight hours into DV Holdings, then partially used for a down payment on a vacation property in Vanessa’s sister’s name.
That detail caused the first visible fracture between Daniel and Vanessa.
He turned toward her.
“Her sister?”
Vanessa whispered, “Not now.”
Eleanor almost smiled.
Fraud partnerships often failed when distribution became visible.
She placed the loan authorization on the table beside her genuine signature samples.
“Your Honor, the signature is copied from a 2019 charitable trust amendment. It retains the same pen lift irregularity at the V, which is impossible in an independently signed document.”
Judge Mercer studied it.
The courtroom was silent.
Then he looked at the investigators.
One stepped forward.
“Your Honor, we have obtained preliminary confirmation from the bank’s fraud unit that the authorization packet is under active review and that preservation holds have been placed on accounts connected to DV Holdings.”
Daniel’s voice broke.
“This is insane.”
