Chapter 1 - YOUR PUNISHMENT JUST ARRIVED

The front doors of Cedar Ridge Lodge slammed open hard enough to shake snow from the brass handles.
Every conversation in Richard Hayes's dining room stopped.
He came in carrying Noah.
The boy was wrapped almost completely inside Richard's dark wool overcoat, only his wet hair and sneakers visible beneath it.
He was crying.
Not loudly anymore.
That was worse.
One small fist clutched a handmade wooden airplane against his chest.
Mark was the first person to move.
“Dad—”
He reached for his son.
Richard knocked his arm away so hard Mark stumbled backward.
His shoulder hit the edge of the birthday display.
Gold paper decorations collapsed.
A tray of champagne glasses tipped.
Mark crashed through a standing arrangement of silver-and-blue balloons while guests jumped out of the way.
Noah flinched against Richard.
“Grandpa…”
Richard looked down.
Noah held up the airplane.
One wing was slightly crooked.
Pencil marks were still visible beneath the varnish.
“I made it for your birthday.”
Richard's face changed for half a second.
Then Mark pushed himself out of the ruined decorations.
His shirt had come untucked.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Richard shifted Noah higher against his chest.
“What am I doing?”
“Give him to me.”
Mark reached again.
Richard turned his entire body away.
Noah disappeared behind his shoulder.
“Do not touch him.”
Several guests quietly moved farther back.
Claudia came from beside the dining table.
Her elegant dress looked absurdly perfect against the sight of her shivering son.
“Richard, this is being blown completely out of proportion.”
He looked at her.
“Is it?”
Mark exhaled in frustration.
“Dad, it was just a small punishment.”
Richard stared at him.
Noah's fingers tightened around the little airplane.
Claudia reached suddenly for it.
“Give me that thing.”
Richard caught her wrist before she touched Noah.
Claudia gasped.
He moved her hand away.
Not violently.
Not gently either.
Then he looked from her to Mark.
“A small punishment?”
Nobody answered.
Richard adjusted his coat around Noah.
The boy's sweater underneath was damp with melted snow.
His jeans were wet at the knees.
His hands were still cold.
Richard's expression emptied.
“Then I've got a small punishment for you too.”
Mark's face changed.
“Dad.”
Richard looked toward the giant windows.
At that exact moment—
headlights came alive beyond the glass.
Not one vehicle.
Three.
Black SUVs moved slowly up the snow-covered driveway.
Conversation in the room disappeared completely.
Mark turned toward them.
The color drained from his face.
Claudia took one step backward.
Then another.
The SUVs stopped outside the lodge.
Doors opened.
Several dark silhouettes stepped into the snow.
Two of them moved toward the rear vehicle.
They lifted something large between them.
Heavy enough that both men had to carry it.
Richard saw Noah trying to look.
He covered the boy's eyes with one hand.
A heavy knock hit the front door.
Once.
Twice.
Mark stared at Richard.
“What did you do?”
May you like
Richard's voice stayed quiet.
“Your punishment just arrived.”
