Chapter 4 - DANIEL KNEW SOMETHING

I found Daniel in the kitchen.

He was opening a bottle of wine with his brother.

I walked toward him.

“Upstairs.”

He looked at my face.

“What happened?”

“Now.”

Something in my voice made him put the bottle down.

He followed me without arguing.

The second the bedroom door closed, I held up the folded black plastic.

“What is this?”

His expression went blank.

“Trash bag?”

“It was wrapped around your daughter.”

His face changed.

“What?”

“Your mother put it under Elena’s clothes because she ate two cookies.”

Daniel stared at me.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No, Mom wouldn’t—”

I laughed.

One short, ugly sound.

“Do not finish that sentence.”

He looked toward Elena.

She sat on the bed holding her stuffed reindeer.

“Elena?”

She immediately moved closer to me.

Daniel saw it.

That hurt him.

Good.

It needed to.

I told him everything.

The scale.

The photographs.

The recorded questions.

The blue folder.

Then I asked:

“What did your mother tell you last week?”

His face tightened.

“What?”

“Elena heard you tell Margaret not to let me find out until after Christmas.”

He looked at our daughter.

Then at me.

“It wasn’t about this.”

“What was it about?”

He rubbed both hands across his face.

“My mother thought Elena was gaining weight too quickly.”

My body went cold.

“And?”

“She wanted to keep a food journal.”

I stared at him.

“You agreed?”

“I said she could track snacks when Elena was at her house.”

“You gave your mother permission to document our six-year-old’s eating?”

“It wasn’t supposed to be cruel.”

“Why hide it from me?”

“Because I knew you’d react exactly like this.”

That sentence nearly ended the conversation.

Exactly like this.

As if my reaction were the problem.

I stepped closer.

“What pictures did she tell you she was taking?”

“Food.”

“Daniel.”

“I swear.”

“Did she mention a lawyer?”

He froze.

Very slightly.

I saw it.

“Daniel.”

“She asked a question.”

“What question?”

He looked toward the door.

Then lowered his voice.

“She asked what would happen if something happened between us.”

“What does that mean?”

“She wanted to know who would have Elena.”

My stomach dropped.

“Why?”

“She said you’ve been stressed.”

I stared at my husband.

“Stressed?”

“She thinks you’re overwhelmed.”

“Based on what?”

He said nothing.

Then I understood.

Margaret had been collecting moments.

Me arriving late after work.

Elena eating cookies.

Laundry on a chair.

A missed call from school.

Every ordinary imperfection converted into evidence.

“Where is the blue folder?”

Daniel looked confused.

“What folder?”

“Your mother’s.”

“I don’t know.”

I turned toward the door.

He grabbed my arm.

“Claire, wait.”

I looked at his hand.

He released me immediately.

“Don’t confront her yet.”

“Why?”

“Because if there really are documents, we need to know what they are.”

For once, Daniel had said something useful.

Then his phone buzzed.

Margaret.

He looked at the screen.

A message preview appeared.

I couldn’t read all of it.

Only the first line.

Did she tell Claire?

May you like

Daniel went pale.

His mother already knew the secret had escaped.
