Chapter 7 - WHAT RYAN SAID WHEN HE CAME OVER

I made Ryan come to my parents’ house.
Not because I needed more pain. Because secrets change shape when they have to stand upright in a room.
He arrived forty minutes later looking like he hadn’t slept in a year.
My father nearly hit him in the driveway.
I think the only reason he didn’t was because my mother screamed.
Ryan sat in the same armchair where he used to drink beer and laugh with my dad during football games.
Now nobody offered him water.
Nobody even sat near him.
I stayed standing.
“Say it all.”
He nodded once.
Then he told the whole story.
The truck before the wedding.
The deleted message.
The restart months later.
The hotel room once when I was visiting a friend in Louisville.
The nights Chloe came to our house while I worked late.
The cash transfers he sent her when she threatened to tell me.
That part startled even Chloe.
She looked at him like she couldn’t believe he had gone that far.
Ryan met her eyes.
“I’m done protecting you.”
Good, I thought.
You should have started by not protecting yourself.
My father asked the question nobody else wanted to.
“Why marry Emma at all?”
Ryan looked at me then.
Not at my parents. Not at Chloe.
“At first because I panicked,” he said. “Then because I loved her and wanted the life I already had with her. Then because every month I waited made it worse. And then because I was a coward.”
No one interrupted.
That was the most honest sentence he spoke.
A cowardice stretched over two years stops looking like weakness and starts becoming character.
My mother whispered:
“You sat at my daughter’s Thanksgiving table.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“You let her help Chloe find apartments.”
“I know.”
“You let her plan your anniversary trip.”
“I know.”
Every answer deepened the room.
Then my father turned to Chloe.
“And you?”
She wiped both cheeks.
“I loved him.”
I stared at her.
“No.”
She looked at me.
“Yes.”
“No. You wanted to win.”
The slap landed because it was true.
She recoiled like I had physically struck her.
I continued.
“You didn’t want a real life with him. If you had, you could’ve had him after the wedding message. You kept the secret because being chosen in the dark mattered more to you than actually living in daylight.”
Her face broke then.
Really broke.
Because that was the part she could not romanticize.
May you like
She had spent two years begging a man to betray me in pieces.
And she still never got to stand beside him in public.
