Chapter 9 - THE DEVICE

Rachel stopped waiting for the family to produce evidence voluntarily. Maya obtained a court preservation order covering trust records, company servers and authentication devices associated with Rachel’s trustee profile. Commonwealth supplied the serial number of the old iPad registered after Helen’s death, and Martin Pierce provided an inventory sheet showing the same device assigned to Vanessa’s executive office.
Richard’s attorney suddenly changed his position. The tablet had existed, he said, but was recycled months earlier during a technology upgrade.
Martin produced the recycling log.
The serial number was not on it.
Someone was lying about where the device went.
Rachel’s first active move outside legal paperwork came through Daniel. He had filmed three Cole Celebration Group events during the previous year before Rachel ever hired him for Emily’s birthday, and his archived footage included office spaces used as staging areas. Rachel asked him to search for the silver-backed iPad with a chipped corner Martin remembered.
Daniel found it in footage from a corporate gala six months earlier.
Vanessa was holding the tablet.
More importantly, Richard stood beside her while she opened a banking application. The video contained no readable account details, but it proved the device survived long after the date Richard’s attorney claimed it had been recycled.
Maya used the clip to expand the preservation order.
Before sheriff’s deputies could inspect the executive offices, a fire alarm emptied the building after someone deliberately burned paper inside a storage-room wastebasket. The fire itself caused little damage, but the sprinkler system flooded one filing room and several computers disappeared during the evacuation.
The authentication tablet was among the missing equipment.
Rachel no longer believed these were improvised acts of panic. Someone inside the company was still actively destroying the chain.
Martin gave investigators the names of employees with access to the office. Security logs narrowed the removal to three people, including Richard’s longtime assistant, Colleen Marsh. Colleen initially denied carrying anything out, but parking-garage footage showed her placing a tablet-sized envelope into Richard’s SUV.
Richard claimed it contained board papers.
Rachel watched the footage beside Maya and felt something unexpected: relief. The harder Richard worked to eliminate the device, the more valuable it became.
Colleen broke before he did.
After investigators confronted her with the garage footage, she admitted Richard instructed her to remove the iPad during the alarm and deliver it to his home. She believed she was preserving confidential family information from “an unnecessary raid.”
Police obtained the device two days later.
It had been factory-reset.
For several hours, the victory seemed empty.
Then Commonwealth’s cybersecurity team explained that trustee authentications created server-side logs independent of the tablet. Device reset could erase local content, not the bank’s record of where and when approval tokens were generated.
Maya requested the full log.
The data showed every disputed transfer after the first $75,000 originated from the same tablet.
None came from Rachel’s townhouse.
Most came from Cole Celebration Group’s executive office.
Three came from Richard’s home.
The emails “from Rachel” used a saved login session from the tablet’s browser.
Someone had not merely forged her signature.
They had been living inside her digital identity.
The log contained one additional field: biometric authorization type.
The first transfer used Rachel’s fingerprint when Helen originally configured the account.
Every later transaction used the tablet’s numeric fallback code.
Rachel had never known that code.
Martin did.
Vanessa did.
Richard did.
The device established method but not yet who pressed the final buttons each time.
Then Daniel called.
While reviewing birthday footage for the burglary investigation, he found another conversation captured after Vanessa threatened Emily. Vanessa entered the hallway and called Richard.
Her words were clearer than anyone expected.
“She found the statement. I told you leaving Rachel’s name on the account would come back on us.”
Richard’s voice was faint through the phone speaker, but one sentence survived.

“Then make sure the tablet story stays dead.”
The man designing the paper trail had finally placed himself inside it.
