Chapter 7 - Kelsey’s Case
Kelsey eventually entered a negotiated plea.
The crash case resolved around reckless driving resulting in injury, false statements connected to the investigation, and later witness-interference conduct.
The assault at my house affected the resolution.
She served a limited period in county custody followed by probation.
Her driver’s license was suspended.
She paid restitution not covered through insurance arrangements.
Her employer did not permanently banish her from her profession, but she lost that particular position.
Ryan did not come back.
That was the consequence she grieved most.
Once, through counsel, she asked him to write a statement saying he left because of “media pressure.”
He refused.
His reply was one sentence:
I left because I stopped knowing which version of you I was expected to protect.
Kelsey showed that sentence to her therapist.
It broke something open.
She had spent months saying I destroyed her engagement.
Ryan’s words forced her to see the relationship had already been damaged by what she asked everyone to participate in.
Aaron Webb recovered enough to return to teaching part-time the following year.
He still had chronic pain.
I did not insert myself into his recovery.
I wrote him one letter.
Not asking forgiveness.
Not explaining the Bennett family.
I said:
I knew something relevant and waited ten days to report it accurately. I am sorry.
He replied months later.
Thank you for correcting it.
That was all.
I did not need him to absolve me.
