Chapter 6 - THE BROOKS ESTATE

The next morning broke over the foothills of the Catalina Mountains in a brilliant burst of golden sunlight. Gone was the dusty, desperate landscape of the roadside; in its place stood the staggering opulence of the Brooks Estate.
Perched high on a private ridge overlooking the Tucson valley, the mansion was a sprawling masterpiece of modern Southwestern architecture. Massive stone pillars, rammed-earth walls, floor-to-ceiling glass panels, and lush private courtyard gardens surrounded the estate. High security walls topped with discreet surveillance cameras ringed the perimeter, guarded by discreet, suited security personnel patrolling the wrought-iron gates.
Inside the guest wing, Emily stood near a massive floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the infinity pool that seemed to spill directly into the desert canyon below.
She was transformed. After a warm bath and a long night’s sleep in a bed larger than any apartment room she had ever rented, she had found tailored clothes waiting for her in the wardrobe—simple, elegant, high-quality attire provided by Nathan's staff. She wore a soft cream knit sweater and dark trousers, her blonde hair washed and brushed, falling cleanly over her shoulders.
Beside her, Noah and Lily were sitting at a small dining table in the room, finishing a breakfast of fresh eggs, berries, and warm pastries. Their cheeks had regained their color, their clothes were fresh and clean, and for the first time in months, the tense, haunted look in their eyes had begun to melt away.
A soft knock sounded at the heavy oak door. It opened smoothly, and Nathan walked into the room.
He looked impeccable. He wore a crisp dark grey suit jacket over his signature open-collared black shirt, his steel watch catching the morning sun. His face was calm, his presence filling the high-ceilinged room effortlessly.
"Did you sleep well?" Nathan asked, his deep voice smooth and respectful.
"Better than we have in years," Emily admitted honestly, turning around to face him. She kept a healthy three paces of distance between them. "The children think they’re in a resort."
"They are safe here," Nathan said plainly. "My security team monitors every foot of this ridge. Nothing enters this estate without my explicit permission."
Emily searched his eyes. "And what happens now? We made an agreement on the road, Nathan. But I still don't fully understand what I'm doing here."
Nathan walked toward the window, looking out over the morning mist rising from the canyon.
"Today, you meet the real authority in this house," Nathan said, his voice taking on a lower, more guarded tone. "My mother."
Emily blinked. "Your mother?"
"She is unwell," Nathan explained, turning back to look at Emily. "Her heart is failing, and her health has deteriorated rapidly over the last six months. She lives in the private East Wing under twenty-four-hour medical care."

He looked closely at Emily, his dark eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her heart race.
"She needs to see you," Nathan added softly. "Come with me."
