Chapter 5 - SAMUEL WAS RIGHT

The rescue vessel reached me before I lost consciousness.
A diver came over the side in a black suit and clipped a flotation collar around my chest while shouting calm commands I barely understood. Strong hands dragged me aboard. Emergency blankets wrapped around me. Someone pressed a heat pack into my palms. Another crew member checked my pupils while the medic asked questions I couldn’t answer coherently.
The only thing I could say was:
“My father pushed me.”
No one looked surprised enough.
That terrified me.
Inside the cabin, a dark-haired woman in a navy weather shell spoke urgently into a satellite phone.
“We found her,” she said. “Samuel was right.”
I looked up.
“Who are you?”
She turned toward me with an expression that mixed professional focus and something like pity.
“My name is Tessa Reed. I work for Calloway Maritime Recovery.”
“Why were you looking for me?”
She hesitated only once.
“Because your grandfather arranged for us to.”
The world seemed to tilt again, even though I was already on stable flooring.
“What?”
Tessa knelt in front of me.
“Mr. Samuel Whitmore contacted our firm before his death. He gave sealed instructions that were to be activated if you disappeared, if your phone signal ceased under suspicious circumstances, or if your parents took you offshore without security clearance from his estate office.”
I stared at her.
“My grandfather thought my parents would kill me?”
“I think he believed they were desperate enough to try.”
The medic handed her a waterproof pouch.
Tessa set it carefully on the bench beside me.
It was a cream envelope sealed in dark red wax.
I knew the seal instantly.
Samuel Whitmore’s personal crest.
“I was told to give you this only if we found you alive,” she said.
My hands shook as I reached toward it.
I did not open it yet.
May you like
Somehow, the fact that Grandfather had predicted this made the envelope heavier than the storm.
Outside the cabin window, through streaks of rain, I could still see the distant outline of my parents’ yacht pushing farther into darkness.
