Chapter 9 - THE ONLY OFFER I MADE

I did not throw them off the land immediately.

I reviewed the documents.

Not as their daughter.

As someone trained to examine a failed project.

There was one realistic path.

Tyler had to surrender the development land, equipment and brand to the creditors.

My parents had to stop guaranteeing additional loans.

Their home could be sold voluntarily before foreclosure, preserving some remaining equity.

They could purchase a smaller condominium with the protected portion of Mom’s retirement account if they acted quickly.

Tyler would enter a formal debt-resolution process and face the consequences of the false representations made in his loan file.

No one would keep the resort.

No one would keep the large family house.

No one would emerge feeling victorious.

They could avoid complete financial ruin.

I wrote the steps on one page and gave them the contact information for an independent restructuring attorney.

Mom stared at the paper.

“You’re not giving us money?”

“No.”

“You said there was a way to save the house.”

“There is a way to save some equity before the lender takes everything. The house itself is no longer affordable.”

Dad shook his head.

“You could pay it off.”

“I could damage my business, risk Ruth’s home and jeopardize every tenant whose rent supports this property.”

“We are your parents.”

“You were my parents when you left me behind nine summers in a row.”

Mom whispered that the vacations had been complicated.

“You told everyone I hated traveling.”

“You had medical needs.”

“I had hearing aids.”

“We were trying to make things easier.”

“For whom?”

She looked away.

Tyler grabbed the restructuring page and tore it in half.

“I’m not walking away from my company.”

“Then the lender will make the decision for you.”

He demanded I remove my complaint about the false emails.

I refused.

He called me cruel.

May you like

That word no longer had power.

I had spent too many years learning the difference between cruelty and boundaries.
