Chapter 9 - HOW MIREYAH SAYS FRIEND

At the end of the school year, the class held a small family afternoon.

Each child presented something they had learned.

Emma spoke about insects.

Sophie demonstrated three basic friendship gestures.

Then Mireyah walked to the front carrying her tablet and the old laminated card.

Hi. Play. Friend.

She placed the card on the table.

The room waited.

She pressed several symbols.

I talk different.

A few parents shifted in their chairs.

Mireyah continued.

I understand you.

Then:

Wait for me.

Her final sentence took longer.

She searched through two screens, selected each word and checked the order before pressing the speaking bar.

Friend is person who stays.

Sophie began crying.

Emma reached for Mireyah’s hand but stopped before touching her, waiting for permission.

Mireyah linked two fingers.

Emma copied the gesture.

Then Sophie joined them.

Three small hands together.

Months earlier, I had watched my daughter chase two girls who kept running away. I had wondered how many times her heart could survive rejection before she stopped trying.

I understand the question differently now.

The goal is not to make Mireyah keep chasing forever.

The goal is to build a world where other children learn to stop, turn around and ask what she has been trying to say.

My daughter’s silence was never emptiness.

It held humor.

Anger.

Hope.

Boundaries.

May you like

And one word she had been offering long before anyone learned how to receive it.

Friend.
